Resolution re: <br />Visit from <br />Italians & <br />Appropriation - <br />$750 <br /> <br />Committee for <br />1981 Celebration <br /> <br /> and requested that the funds allocated for the entire project <br /> be restored. The Mayor reminded Mrs. Wars that Schenk's Branch <br /> would be covered to 10th Street and the remainder would be considered <br /> next year, since all the money could not be spent in this year. <br /> Mr. Brunton stated that he was committed to serious consideration <br /> to supply the money next year to complete this project. Mr. <br /> Barbour moved that the Council reconsider its action and allocate <br /> funds to complete the covering of Schenk's Branch, which motion <br /> died for lack of a second. The City Manager reminded the Council <br /> that money for design of the balance of the project is provided <br /> in the allocation for this year. Mr. Fife stated that he did <br /> not vote for the complete project this year realizing that all <br /> the money' could not be spent in this year. He also stated that <br /> since he would not be on Council next year he did not think this <br /> Council should bind the next'Council. Mr. Barbour strongly <br /> urged the Council to reconsider its vote and allocate funds for <br /> completion of the covering of Schenk's Branch. The City Manager <br /> also stated that all the legal requirements have been met'for <br /> allocation of these funds. <br /> <br /> Mr. Mike Gleason addressed the Council and stated that the <br /> Committee has investigated the request from the State Department <br /> concerning a visit by a~delegation from Italy wishing to visit <br /> Charlottesville and Albemarle County. He stated that the committee <br /> has investigated availability of rooms and dates for the visit <br /> and recommended that the delegation be invited to visit April 13th <br /> and 14th of 1978. He stat.ed that the committee would need <br /> about $3,000 to host this visit and requested the City and <br /> <br /> County to each contribute $750.00 and the balance would be raised <br /> from private sources. On motion by Mr. Gatewood, seconded by Mr. <br /> Fife the following resolution was unanimously adopted. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the community of Charlottesville and Albemarle <br /> County once hosted, and had as its resident, Mr. Filippo Mazzei, <br /> a native of Poggio a Caiano, Italy, and a friend of Thomas <br /> Jefferson; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the community is proud of the friendship <br /> and assocation of Mr. Mazzei and Mr. Jefferson; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the community has learned that a delegation <br /> from Poggio a Caiano plans to visit here in April 1978; <br /> <br /> NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Council of the <br /> City of Charlottesville, the Board of Supervisors of the County <br /> of Albemarle, and the Italian Advisory Committee of the City and <br /> County, in behalf of the citizens of the community, extend to <br /> this delegation an official invitation and welcome to <br /> Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Gatewood, seconded by Mr. Brunton the <br /> <br />following resolution, was adopted by the following recorded vone. <br />Ayes: Mr. Barbour, Mr. Brunton, Mr. Fife, Mr. Gatewood and Mrs. <br /> <br />O'Brien. Noes: None. <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottes- <br />ville that the sum of $750.00 be and the same is hereby <br />appropriated to expenditure account 01-92330 for expenses <br />incurred in connection with the visit of a delegation from <br />Poggio a Caiano, Charlottesville's twin community in Italy. <br /> <br /> Mr. Gleason also renewed his request for a committee to plan <br /> <br />for the 1981 Celebration. The Mayor appointed Mr. Gatewood and Mr. <br />Fife to this committee.
