MAYORtS STATEMENT: <br />ON COMMITTEE FOR <br />REVITALIZATION OF <br />THE CENTRAL CITY <br /> <br />CON~!DERATtON RI.' <br /> <br /> SO FAR AS ~ AM CONCERNED THIS ]'S~THE GREATEST CiTY IN AMERICA~ BUT WE <br /> <br /> MUST EXERT OURSELVES TO MAKE IT EVEN MORE ATTRACTIVE~ AND MORE SATISFYING TO <br /> THOSE WHO LIVE HERE AND THOSE WHO WILL COME TO dOtN US. <br /> <br /> HAVING THESE THINGS IN HIND THE COUNCIL BELIEVES THAT IT MUST GIVE SUPPORT <br /> TO THOSE EFFORTS TOWARD REdUVENATION ALREADY BEGUN IN THE CENTER OF OUR CITY. <br /> FURTHERMORE THE COUNCIL HAS DECIDED THAT THE CITY MUST OFFER LEADERSHIP AND <br /> FINANCIAL SUPPORT IN A JOINT PROGRAM WITH OTHERS WHO HAVE EVIDENCED THEIR <br /> INTEREST. <br /> <br /> THE COUNCIL HEREBY CREATES A CENTRAL CITY COMMISSION TO ADVISE THE COUNCIL <br /> AS TO WHAT ACTIONS SHOULD BE ~AKEN TO DEVELOP THE CENTER OF THE CITY. THE <br /> COHMISSION WILL BE REQUESTED TO CARRY OUT HANY OF THOSE ACTIONS RECOMMENDED, <br /> <br /> ]~TS ROLE WILL BE THAT OF CONSIDERING PLANS AND PROGRAMS AND OF BRINGING TOGETHER <br /> OF VARIOUS FORCES IN THE COMMUNITY NEEDED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. <br /> <br /> ~WO COUNCILMEN AND MANY OTHER LEADING CITIZENS ARE BEING APPOINTED TO THE <br /> COMMISSION. A MEMBER OF THE ~OARD OF THE REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY <br /> IS BEING INCLUDED ON THE COMMISSION BECAUSE OF THE NEED TO COORDINATE WITH THAT <br /> BODY. THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY WAS ASKED TO DESIGNATE A MEMBER OF HIS <br /> STAFF FOR APPOINTHENT ~O THE COMHISSION. <br /> <br /> ~E HEREBY APPOINT TO THE ~OMMISSION: <br /> <br /> ALVIN CLEHENTS~ CHAIRMAN <br /> RAYMOND DELL <br /> HOVEY DABNEY <br /> GEORGE GILLIAM - COUNCILMAN <br /> CLYDE GOULDMAN - REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY <br /> COLE HENDRI× - COORDINATOR <br /> ROBERT PONTON <br /> JILL RINEHART - COUNCILMAN <br /> DANIEL ROOKER <br /> ~ARD SIMS - UNIVERSITY <br /> MYRON TREHAIN <br /> HARMON ~ILLIAMS <br /> MARY ~ILLIAMS - DOWNTOWN MERCHANTS <br /> MR. CLEMENTS HAS BEEN ASKED TO BE CHAIRMAN. <br /> <br /> UNDOUBTEDLY MANY INdiVIDUALS AND ORGINIZATIONS WILL BE REQUESTED TO JOIN <br /> <br /> IN THE TOTAL EFFORT, <br /> <br /> THE COUNCIL FEELS THAT ~TtHE IS OF THE ESSENCE" AND THAT THE COMMISSION <br /> WILL NEED TO MOVE FORWARD RAPIDLY. ~E HAVE ASKED COLE HENDRI~ TO BECOME <br /> COORIDINATOR IN ORDER THAT SOMEONE BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONT~iNUOUS PROPAGATION <br /> OF RECOMMENDATIONS. IN OTHER WORDS SOMEONE IS NEEDED TO SEE~ THAT THE ACTIONS <br /> DECIDED UPON BY THE COUNCIL AND THE COMMISSION ARE CARRIED OUT. <br /> <br /> IN ORDER TO DO THIS~ MR. HENDRIX WILL ASSIGN SOME OF HIS DUTIES TO H. ~o <br />[WERT~ WHO HAS BEEN PROMOTED TO DEPUTY CITY MANAGER BY MR. HENDRIX. MR. <br />HENDRI× WILL) OF COURSE~ REMAIN CITY MANAGER AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPERVISE <br />THE ENTIRE CITYtS MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS. HE WILL HAVE TO DEVOTE A SUBSTANTIAL <br />AMOUNT OF TIME TO THE WORK OF THE CENTRAL CITY COMMISSION. <br /> <br /> IN ORDER THAT THIS PROGRAM MEET WITH THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF SUCCESS THE <br />COUNCIL URGES ALL ~HO EITHER LIVE OR WORK OR HAVE ~NY OTHER INTEREST IN THE <br />CENTRAL PART OF OUR CITY TO GIVE THEIR FULL COOPERATION. <br /> <br /> TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHY I AM VERY OPTIMISTIC AT THIS POINT LET ME <br /> <br />JUST TELL YOU THAT OF THOSE PERSONS THE COUNCIL DECIDED TO ASK TO SERVE ON <br />THE COMMISSION~ NOT ONE TURNED US DOWN. FURTHERMORE EACH INDIVIDUAL IS VERY <br />ENTHUSIASTIC A~OUT OUR PLAN. <br /> <br />THE CITY MANAGERtS PROPOSAL FOR SUBSIDIZING HOUSING FOR LOW AND MODERATE <br />INCOME FAMILIES WAS ~GAIN DISCUSSED. THE CITY MANAGER ADVISED THE COUNCIL <br />THAT HE HAS RECEIVED A LEGAL OPINION TO THE EFFECT THAT THE CiTY HAS AUTHORITY <br /> <br /> <br />
