Minutes of January 6 <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION <br />b. : $6,955 - Reimbursements for Burlington, Vermont Trip <br />nd <br /> (2 reading) <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that <br />$6,955 received from the Charlottesville/Albemarle Community Foundation is hereby <br />appropriated into account 05 - 020 - 092031 - 53110 as reimbursement for the expenses <br />incurred on the “Journey of Learning” trip to Burlington, VT. <br /> <br />nd <br />APPROPRIATION <br />c. : $25,000 - Southern Area B Study (2 reading) <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that <br />$25,000 from the Capital Fund Contingency Account (26 - 020 - 122050) be appropriated to <br />26 - 280 - 092060 - 50111 for the City’s share of expenses associated with the Southern Area <br /> <br />B Study. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION <br />d. : $25,000 - Proceeds for Sale of Voting Machines <br />nd <br /> (2 reading) <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that <br />$25,000 from the City of Virginia Beach be appropriated from 26 - 020 - 031101 - 44227 to <br /> <br />26 - 020 - 031101 - 50111 to help offset the cost of the new voting machines. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br />e. : Approving Worker's Compensation Settlement <br />BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia: <br /> <br />It appearing to be in the best interests of the City, and it being at the request of our <br />former employee, who is represented by counsel, we hereby approve a lump sum <br />settlement of a workers’ compensation claim in the amount of $125,000.00, all as agreed <br />between staff and the employee (whose name is not stated here for reasons of <br />confidentiality). The Director of Finance is hereby authorized to make payment from the <br />Risk Management Fund in accordance with the settlement terms. <br /> <br />The approval hereby given for the entire settlement is conditioned upon form al <br />approval of the settlement by the Workers’ Compensation Commission of the State of <br />Virginia. <br /> <br />ORDINANCE <br />f. : "AN ORDINANCE CLOSING, VACATING AND <br /> DISCONTINUING AN ALLEY LOCATED IN THE 900 BLOCK OF ANDERSON <br />nd <br /> STREET BETWEEN ANDERSON STREET AND PAOLI STREET" (2 reading) <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> <br />Mr. Scott Burns, 209 Montevista Avenue, said that if Councilors were elected <br />through a ward system he feels they would have a better grip on neighborhood needs. <br />Mr. Burns said he does not think we need any new taxes, and thinks the City has plenty <br />of money. He said he opposes increasing the meals tax, and feels Councilors should <br />rearrange their budget priorities within the existing budget. Mr. Burns said there was a <br />time when taxes paid for trash. He said he suppor ts using taxes for things such as police, <br />fire school, parks and recreation, infrastructure (including trash), and capital <br />improvements. He said we do not need programs such as providing a rebate for low - flow <br />toilets and healthy family programs. He said we need to look at what benefits most <br />citizens in our communities. Mr. Burns added that the community is still no safer for <br />bikers. <br /> <br /> Ms. Ashley Snyder, Fontaine Avenue, encouraged Council to include Fontaine <br />Avenue in the speed limit issue as it is impor tant to the neighborhood. <br /> <br />
