CiTY MGR. REPORT RE:
7TH STREET GARAGE BLDGo
AND MIDWAY BLDG.

RESOLUTION APPROP,
CARRIED OVER RE:
SUPPLEMENT NO. 1
CITY CODE

DEED AUTHORIZED RE:
TRANSFER LAND/.AT DISTRICT
HOME.

AUTHORITIES~ LOWER THE BANK IN THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE REAR DRIVEWAY FROM
THE SCHOOL AND 9TH STREET, THiS WILL PROVIDE GOOD SIGHT DISTANCE ON 9TH STREET
FROM THE NORTH,

(4) THE STREET COMMITTEE WOULD LIKE TO URGE AGAIN THAT ALL TRAFFIC
FRO~ SCHOOL (VEHICLE~ BICYCLE~ AND PEDESTRIAN) WHICH IS GOING TO CHERRY AVENUE
USE THE CHERRY AVENUE ENTRANCE WHERE A POLICEHAN IS STATIONED AND SIDEWALKS
HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.

(BI YOUR COMMITTEE ALSO CONSIDERED THE REQUEST FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT AT 9TH ~
CHERRY AVENUE AND DOES NOT RECOMMEND THE INSTALLATION OF A SUCH LIGHT AT THIS
TIME. THE VEHICULAR TRAFFIC VOLUME ON 9TH STREET IS NOT GREAT ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY
A LIGHT AT THiS TIME AND PROVISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR PEDESTRIAN CROSSING OF
CHERRY AVENUE AT THE SCHOOL ENTRANCE,
YOUr COMMITTEE Will CONTINUE TO OBSERVE THiS iNTERSECTION FOR POSSIBLE
FUTURE LIGHT INSTALLATION.

(c) Your COMMITTEE ALSO DOES NOT FEEL THAT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION
OF EMMET STREET AND JEFFERSON PARK AVENUE IS NEEDED AT THIS TIME.
YOUR COMMITTEE DOES BELIEVE THAT A LIGHT MIGHT BE NEEDED AT JEFFERSON PARK
AVENUE - HAURY AVENUE - FONTAINE AVENUE INTERSECTION~ AND THE CiTY HANAGER HAS
REQUESTED THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO STUDY THIS iNTERSECTION AND IF APPROVED
TO FURNISH THE CiTY WITH PROPER DESIGN LAYOUT~ ETC. ~

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED~

STREET COlV~ I TTEE
G. A. VOGT (SIGNED)
E. OUNT
J,M BOWEN' (~IG,,N,E]D) '

ON MOTION BY MR. VOGT~ SECONDED BY HR, MOUNT~ THE RECOMMENDATIONS CONTAINED IN

THE FOREGOING REPORT WE'RE UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED,

THE FOLLOWING REPORT OF THE CiTY MANAGER WAS PRESENTED:

DECEMBER 5, 1966

To THE HEMBERS Of THE COUNCIL
CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE~ VIRGINIA

GENTLEMEN:

A FEW WEEKS AGO YOU REFERRED TO HE THE MATTER OF DEMOLISHING THE 7TH
STREET GARAGE BUILDING AND THE MIDWAY BUILDING~ AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A
NEW STORAGE BUILDING AT THE CiTY YARD TO HOUSE THE MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES
STORED IN THESE EXISTING BUILDINGS. I HAVE STUDIED THIS MATTEr AND REPORT
AS FOLLOWS:

THE PRESENT JAil BUILDING WHICH IS TO BE REPLACED IN 1968-69 WOULD
PROVIDE A SATISFACTORY STORAGE BUILDING AFTER~ OF COURSE~ A NEW JAIL IS
CONSTRUCTED.

THE MIDWAY BUILDING COULD IN THE MEANTIME BE USED FOR STORAGE OF THE
CIVIL DEFENSE AND OTHER SUPPLIES NOW STORED IN THIS BUILDING AND IN THE
7TH STREET GARAGE, THE 7TH STREET GARAGE COULD THEN BE REMOVED WITHIN
THE NEXT FEW MONTHS,

THE ALTERNATIVE IS TO CONSTRUCT A NEW STORAGE BUILDING AT THE YARD
AND DEMOLISH BOTH THE MIDWAY AND ?TH STREET BUILDINGS. THE COST OF A
SUCH NEW BUILDING WOULD BE ABOUT ~100,000.00.

I RESPECTFULLY RECOMMEND THAT THE HIDWAY BUILDING NOT BE DEMOLISHED
AT THIS TIME AND THAT IT BE USED FOR STORAGE ON~ AND THAT THE 7TH STREET
GARAGE BUILDING BE REMOVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE,

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED~

dEB: RB

JiM BOWEN (SIGNED)
CITY MANAGER

ON MOTION BY MR.
