15 <br /> <br /> Mr. Bobby Thompson, School administrative staff, provided Council with a copy <br />of the choice option form for parents. Mr. Thompson said that there is no guarantee that <br />the first school choice will be given to parents. <br /> <br /> Mr. Art Stowe, Clark School principal, provided data on scores for Clark students. <br />He said that Clark staff is well prepared for instructional enhancement. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton asked what happens if high achieving students opt for school <br />choice, and Mr. Towe said instruction is crafted for individual needs. <br /> <br />Ms. Hamilton also asked if low income parents were taking advantage of choice. <br /> <br /> Ms. Dimberg said that national data show that higher achieving students are more <br />likely to opt for choice, and that appears to be the case at Clark. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stowe said he is confident that there will not be an overwhelming number of <br />students who opt for school choice. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Schilling, Mr. Thompson said that to date 18 <br />parents (25 students) have opted for choice. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stowe noted that some parents have opted for choice whose children have not <br />attended Clark before. <br /> <br /> Mr. Schilling asked about the capacity at other elementary schools, and Mr. <br />Thompson said it varies by grade. He noted that a moratorium has been placed on the out <br />of district program until this issue is resolved. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown asked if the Schools are anticipating more avenues for community <br />involvement at Clark such as the Book Buddies program. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stowe said that the Quality Community Council can help by providing <br />support for parents. <br /> <br /> Dr. Griffith said that QCC can assist in training parents to help their children in <br />gaining skills <br /> <br /> Ms. Smith said that the State looks at different data for accreditation. She said <br />that AYP is a federal requirement and data is collected from 3rd grade testing. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton asked how can we help kids who fail from getting discouraged, and <br />Mr. Stowe said staff attempt to help them see their own progress. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ned Michie, School Board member, said there are great teachers and staff at <br />Clark. He said Clark has the highest number of children in need in the school system. <br /> <br /> Mr. Thompson said transportation costs will not be known until August, but said <br />that $50,000 was set aside for this purpose. <br /> <br /> Dr. Griffith said that money could be used for improving math, especially at the <br />middle schools, and reading at the high school. Dr. Griffith said she wants to look at <br />writing grants to enhance what we are doing, and said the schools could use a grant <br />writer. She said that the School Board has decided to contract with Phi Delta Kappa to <br />do a comprehensive assessment of programs and processes in the schools. <br /> <br /> Dr. Griffith said there will be a teacher orientation program on August 16th at the <br />Performing Arts Center and she invited Councilors to attend. <br /> <br />The meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />President Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
