Creating Community Charlottesville supports a shared sense of community among the ethnic, social, economic and racial diversity of our citizens, through the support of our families and the strength of our neighborhoods; the recording and maintenance of our cultural and physical history; the participation and enjoyment of our citizens in our arts and cultural activities; and through the involvement of our citizens in the public process. Natural Environment Our citizens enjoy an accessible natural environment with healthy, flourishing waterways, clean breathable air and a green, visually attractive environment. As our economy continues to grow we are minimizing the impact on the environment in order to preserve (Tyler note: and enhance) our natural beauty for future generations. Practice on Creating an Action Agenda and Operating Guidelines The next activity was designed to see how the vision might be used to create an "action agenda" and to develop some initial operating guidelines. The Council did not complete this activity. Council Members were asked to: 1. Identify the 3 - 4 key projects that will "symbolize" the Council's work as it relates to this vision target. 2. Identify the 3 - 4 key principles that will guide our approach to this vision target Economic Development and Employment (key work) · See an increase in lowest 25% of wage earners (real wages) and see them move up __% · Get number of families in poverty into single digits Housing (key work) · Seek partnerships and put creative strategies in place to make sure that over next four years no less than 25% of new housing is "affordable." · Stabilize our existing stock of public housing. · Intensify strategies to have other counties provide low income housing. · Explore Housing Trust Fund Education (key work) · All schools fully accredited · Dramatically increase the achievement of the lowest performing students · Increase educational partnerships with University of Virginia and PVCC Education (principles) · Ensure that there is buy-in to the leadership vision for the stakeholders · Look for ways for Council and larger community to play a supporting role in the educational mission of our School Board · Support life long learning opportunities · Continue regular joint meetings · Council needs to continually express belief that all children can succeed and look for ways to communicate that belief · Find ways to support parents of low-achieving children. Transportation (key work) · Reconfigured bus system that is more efficient, more convenient and reaches more areas
