He said he thinks the current location is a good one.

Ms. Jennifer Tidwell, “Miss Representation,” 907 Raymond Road, appealed to
Council to move the statue of Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea to a park, plaza or museum
when the intersection is redone as many find the depiction of Sacajawea and the text on
the statue to be wrong and offensive. She said that a demonstration will be held at the
statute on Columbus Day to reject the statue as a relic of history.

Mr. Stratton Salidas, 414 Main E. Main Street, asked that Council visualize
Charlottesville in five to ten years when money is spent on roads versus on walking and
biking. Main Street, said that the Lewis and Clark statue is
appalling to him. He expressed concern about building more roads.

Mr. Anthony Guy Lopez, Schuyler, a U. Va. graduate student, an American
Indian, supported comments about the Lewis and Clark statue. He said U. Va. has no
tenured American Indian teachers, and they have no space for American Indian studies.
He said he doubts the City has programs for American Indians. He asked that Council
formally act to create a committee and work with tribes in this region.

Mr. Rob Graighurst, 710 Blenheim Avenue, asked Council to make provisions for
exemptions on a case by case basis if they change hours in the parks. He suggested that the focus be on young citizens, especially Charlottesville
High School students, and suggested that Council consider providing free bus rides for
kids all year round. He suggested that there be a bus route to CHS.

COUNCIL RESPONSES TO MATTERS BY THE PUBLIC

Mr. Norris said he does not believe there are any current plans to relocate the
Central Library, but he thinks they are looking at renovation. He said he agrees with
“Miss Representation.”

Ms. Hamilton asked that Mr. Lopez provide his contact information as there are
some things going on around town that he might be interested in. She said she has heard
from the public about changing the hours for Lee Park, especially those who walk their
dogs at night, and thinks Council should talk about this further. Ms. Hamilton said she
will talk to Mr. Mason outside of the Council meeting about his concerns because of
confidential information about his marital status. She said Mr. Freckman makes a good
point about buses for students. She said she hears from the police that having some
students drive to school contributes to class divide. She said she thinks that would be
relatively easy to fix.

Mr. Taliaferro said he will try to get information to Mr. Mason.

Mr. Lynch said he agrees with the issue about American Indian heritage. He said
there was discussion about moving the Central Library to the Jefferson School site, but
there was no interest. He asked Mr. O’Connell
to respond to the comment about McIntire Road Extended on the agenda.
