13
Mr. Norris said this is one of the best things going on in the City, and he thanked
Mr. Stewart for his leadership.

REPORT
: CLIMATE PROTECTION PROGRAM STATUS REPORT

Ms. Kristel Riddervold, Environmental Administrator, provided a status report on
the City’s Climate Protection program, including: summary of greenhouse gases and
criteria air pollutants; overview of comparable efforts by the State and other localities;
methodology; greenhouse gas tonnage per capital; summary of sources of emissions and
criteria air pollutants; and a summary of City fleet/streetlights/building.
Recommendations for next steps include: collaboration with Albemarle County, decision
about what to do with the data, formation of a regional Climate Action Team, setting
reduction targets and developing an action plan.

Mr. Norris thanked Ms. Riddervold for providing the data. He said
Charlottesville is at the forefront especially for a city our size.

Dr. Brown said the City can work hard, but the rest of the City has to get
involved, and this approach will show others what efforts work best. He said that in
order to move forward in a serious way we may need to have more staff to get out in the
community.

Mr. Norris noted that street lights are energy hogs.

Ms. Edwards said she would like to include middle and high school students on
the action team. She said Ms. Riddervold is a good role model.

Mr. Norris said it appears to be the consensus of Council for Ms. Riddervold to
move forward with the recommendations.

REPORT
: VIRGINIA MUNICIPAL LEAGUE GO GREEN CHALLENGE

Ms. Riddervold said that the Virginia Municipal League has launched a new
initiative to encourage localities to green up. She said it will involve workshops and
friendly competition.

It was the consensus of Council to go forward with the VML Go Green
Challenge.

PUBLIC

There were no matters by the public.

The meeting was adjourned.

______________________________ _____________________________
President Clerk
