She said 81 students have been selected for the Summer Youth Internship <br />program. She said PVCC and Community Attention are offering the work to learn <br />program. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown asked if the job fair could be made more than an annual event. <br /> <br /> Mr. Robert Cox, Director of Social Services, said that the job fair is a partnership <br />between Social Services and Economic Development, and discussions have been held <br />about trying to do two per year. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said that in the poverty focus group he attended, a discussion was held <br />about the challenges of ex-offenders. He asked if the Board has talked about that issue. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said Social Services is a part of a community coalition and statewide <br />network, and he said it might be good to give Council a report on that. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown asked if the staff levels are measured by a matrix or lost positions, and <br />Mr. Cox said by a matrix created by the State Department of Social Services. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he wishes that the One Stop Center had located on a bus line <br />rather than asking the City to move the bus line. Dr. Brown thanked the Social Services <br />staff and board members. <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris said he never liked the location of the One Stop Center, and said space <br />st <br />would be available for a satellite center at the 1 Street Center. <br /> <br />REPORT <br />: MOSQUITO ENFORCEMENT <br /> <br /> Mr. Tolbert said that mosquitoes have been a problem this year due to the large <br />amount of rain. He said staff provides enforcements through the City Code regarding <br />refuse and stagnant water. He said the City does not spray, but it is done in a lot of <br />localities. He said educating the public about the problem is the best thing to do. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said pockets around Charlottesville have problems with mosquitoes, <br />and asked if people can call NDS regarding possible stagnant water in neighbors’ yards, <br />and Mr. Tolbert said yes. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown suggested reaching out to neighborhood association, and asked what <br />an education campaign would look like. <br /> <br /> Mr. Tolbert said information would be put on the website, channel 10 and through <br />press releases. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he would like to pursue more education about non-toxic ways to <br />treat ditches. <br /> <br /> Mr. Tolbert said that is currently done on public land and construction sites. <br /> <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br />: CHARLOTTESVILLE TRANSIT SYSTEM FARE REVISIONS <br /> <br /> Mr. Bill Waterson, Transit Manager, said that ridership is up 40% for the fare free <br />rides paid for by U. Va. He said when people do not have to think about paying for every <br />trip, they ride the bus more. He said the current regular fare is 75 cents, with a 25 cent <br />reduced fair for the elderly or disabled. He said there are also daily passes. He said the <br />proposal is to eliminate the transfer fare and offer discounted daily pass for $1.50, with a <br />discounted daily pass of 75 cents. Also, it is recommended that we have a $20 monthly <br />pass, with a discounted fare of $10. He said this would be close to revenue neutral. <br /> <br /> <br />
