3 <br /> Dr. Brown said he would like to see us develop a program, perhaps through a tree <br />commission, to put 100 new trees on private property in areas where they are needed, <br />where the owner would be income eligible, and where there is a commitment by the <br />property owner to maintain the trees. <br /> <br /> Ms. Edwards suggested connecting with school programs. <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris said perhaps a tree commission could be woven in with the <br />sustainability committee. <br /> <br />A Center for Lifelong Learning <br /> <br /> Ms. Beauregard said an in-school year internship program is being developed. <br /> <br />Workforce Development <br /> <br /> Mr. Huja said he would like to incorporate the model for employment that was <br />used on the mall project elsewhere. <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris suggested that the program be extended to other projects that involve <br />City dollars, not just those that the City manages. <br /> <br /> Ms. Judy Mueller, Director of Public Works, said staff is working through PVCC <br />to get people focused on a trade and is trying to get sub-contractors to hire these people <br />for City and other jobs. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown suggested that the City Manager have a discussion with Tom Frederick <br />of Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority and ask if there are opportunities to do that, and <br />to report back to see if there are other City or regional projects where this could be done. <br /> <br /> Ms. Edwards asked how many people got jobs as a result of the City’s Job Fair. <br /> <br /> Mr. Chris Engel, Assistant Director of Economic Development, said that is <br />difficult to track, but they are following up with employers. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown suggested that information be provided on City resources during the <br />Job Fair. <br /> <br /> Mr. Engel said that the Department of Social Services helps prepare people in <br />advance and on the day of the Job Fair. <br /> <br />Smart Citizen Focused Government <br /> <br /> Mr. Huja asked what has been done to streamline the development process. <br /> <br /> Mr. Tolbert said that some things are now done administratively and no longer go <br />to the Planning Commission such as review of basic site plans. <br /> <br />Quality of Service and Efficiency <br /> <br /> Ms. Beauregard said staff is moving forward with recommendations on the <br />Comprehensive Services Act. She said all departments have quality of service and <br />efficiency as a goal. <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris asked if we can get an update on the corridor study for each corridor <br />and a recommendation about where we might focus some of our resources. <br /> <br />UPDATE ON P3 INITIATIVES AND ACTIVITIES <br /> <br /> Ms. Beauregard provided information updating Council on activities and <br />initiatives of the P3 program. <br /> <br /> <br />
