105

PUBLIC

Mr. Howey Long, Coach of the Dixie Little League, presented Council with a proposal
to build and maintain, with private financing for construction, an additional Little League
field at Mclntire park. Mr. Long said enrollment will need to be capped if facilities are not
expanded. Mr. Long said participation by City children is falling, in part due to
transportation problems, and therefore it is felt the field should be located in the City. Mr.
Long requested Council's consideration by the next meeting in order to stay on schedule for
completion of the field.

Responding to a question from Ms. Daugherty, Mr. Long said coaches and parents
provide transportation for those who need it.

Mr. O'Connell said one issue that needs to be considered is that the Dogwood Festival
carnival takes place on the location proposed for the additional field, and a new site would
need to be found. Mr. O'Connell said staff will work with representatives from the Little
League on the matter.

Ms. Slaughter recommended that the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee be
involved in the process. Ms. Slaughter also suggested that the Little League representatives
discuss the matter with Albemarle County since the facilities are also used by County youth.

CONSENT, AGENDA

On motion by Rev.
