135 <br /> <br /> COUNCIL CHAMBER - August 5, 1996 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date ~vith the following members present: <br />Cox, Ms. Richards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano. Absent: Ms. Daugherty. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br />Mr. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter announced that Police Officer Chris Graziano will be attending the <br />International Police Olympics, and wished her luck. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter announced that Susannah Rutherglen, a 9th grade student at <br />Charlottesville High School, won Best of Show at the Piedmont Regional Science Fair, <br />earned first place in the mathematics category, and won an Army Math and Computer <br />Award. Because of her outstanding achievements, she competed in the International Science <br />and Engineering Fair in Tucson, Arizona. <br /> <br /> Mr. Brent Nelson, 214 South Street, said he that he does not agree with a statement <br />previously made by the applicant requesting the rezoning on Elsom Street that opponents of <br />the rezoning did not reflect the majority of neighbors. Mr. Nelson said he speaks for good <br />planning even though he may not live in the affected neighborhood. <br /> <br />CONSENT AGENDA <br /> <br />The settlement of claim ordinance was removed from the consent agenda. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards said she was impressed with the private contributions to the amphitheater <br />bandshell made by NationsBank, State Farm Insurance, Charlottesville Downtown <br />Foundation, and the charlottesVille Municipal Band. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano said he feels that it would be worthwhile for the information provided to <br />Council on community policing to be publicly presented at a future meeting. <br /> <br /> Referring to the community policing survey, Mr. Cox expressed concern about how the <br />data is compiled, and said he hopes in the future the survey will be conceived of with ample <br />community participation. Mr. Cox said he feels the survey techniques undermine the ability <br />to understand the report. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Toscano, seconded by Ms. Richards, the fotlowingconsent agenda <br />items were unanimously approved, with Ms. Daugherty absent for the vote. <br /> <br />a. Minutes of July 15 and 17 <br /> <br />b. APPROPRIATION: $12,763 - "$2 for Life" Funding (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia that the sum <br />of $12,763.00, received in the City's General Fund as revenue from the Virginia Department <br />of Health's "$2 for Life" program, is hereby appropriated to the following General Fund <br />expenditure accounts for use by the following agencies: <br /> <br />05-301-061040 <br /> <br />Thomas Jefferson Emergency <br />Medical Services <br /> <br />$ 6,381.50 <br /> <br />05-260-042016 <br /> <br />Charlottesville Fire Department $ 6,381.50 <br /> $12,763.00 <br /> <br /> Said funds shall be used for the purposes of training and equipment purchases in <br />accordance with the guidelines of the $2 for Life program. <br /> <br /> <br />
