APPROPRIATION: $29,033.32 - "Respect Equals Success Grant (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia that the sum <br />of $28,453.00, to be received as a grant from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice <br />Services, and $580.00 from the unappropriated balance of the General Fund, for a total <br />appropriation of $29,033.32, is hereby appropriated to expenditure account 11-020-062084 <br />to implement the project known as "Respect Equals Success", an intervention program for <br />middle school children with a history of assaultive behaviors. <br /> <br />d. APPROPRLa, TION: $7,500 - Sobriety Checkpoint Grant (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that the <br />sum of $7,500.00, to be received as a grant from the Department of Motor Vehicles, is <br />hereby appropriated to expenditure account 11-270-041147 in the Grants Fund for the <br />purpose of supporting the Sobriety Checkpoint program administered by the Charlottesville <br />Police Department. ORDINANCE: "AN ORDINANCE CLOSING, VACATING AND <br /> DISCONTINUING A PORTION OF HOLLY DRIVE (2nd reading) <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: REGIONAL TOURISM COUNCIL <br /> <br /> Ms. Sandy Greenwood, Chair of the Regional Tourism Council, make a presented on <br />the Council, s recent activities. Ms. Greenwood said that the vision of the Council is to <br />increase tourist visitations and spending. <br /> <br /> Mr. FmTest McKay, a member of the Regional Tourism Council, presented information <br />on the significant positive financial impact of tourism <br /> <br /> Mr. Bryan Elliott, Airport Manager and member of the Tourism Council, stated that <br />tourism is a catalyst for the local economy, contributes to the local tax base, and enhances the <br />overall quality of life for citizens of the community. Mr. Elliott said that in 1994, 4,000 jobs <br />in the Charlottesville region were linked to tourism and there were total taxable sales of $4 <br />million attributable to tourism. <br /> <br /> Ms. Greenwood explained that the CoUncil has applied for a grant to fund an Internet <br />information program. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter recommended that the Tourism Council increase their focus on the three <br />presidents from the area rather than only on Thomas Jefferson and try to improve the <br />advertisement for the Visitors Center. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Toscano, Ms. GreenwOod said that the Tourism <br />Council needs to clearly understand the tourism market, the community is lacking in large <br />spaces for conferences, and the community needs to be more professional in selling itself. <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: COMMUNITY POLICING <br /> <br /> Mr. John Wolford, Chief of Police, discussed community policing efforts, Police and <br />Community Together (P.A.C.T.): establishment of substations, bike patrol, mounted unit, <br />major recruiting for minorities, school partnerships, and aggressive enforcement activities. <br />ChiefWolford said that the community needs to be actively involved in deciding the direction <br />of the police department. ChiefWolford said it may be time to consider a youth curfew as <br /> <br /> <br />
