65 <br /> <br />System is to assure that all individuals of the Commonwealth <br />of Virginia are given a continuing opportunity for the <br />development and extension of their skills and knowledge; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Piedmont Virginia Community College, one of the <br />twenty-three member colleges of the Virginia Community <br />College System, serves the Piedmont region of the state <br />including Charlottesville) and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ the Virginia Community College System is <br />celebrating Community College Week January 19-25, 1992; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Charlottesville <br />City Council extends congratulations and best wishes to <br />Piedmont Virginia Community College and the Virginia <br />Community College System and declares January 19-25, 1992, <br />Community College Week in Charlottesville. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION: AUTHORIZING GRANT APPLICATION FOR FITNESS EQUIPMENT <br /> <br /> Mr. German stated that the grant for fitness equipment <br />is available through the National Fitness Campaign, sponsored <br />in part by Martha Jefferson Hospital, and if received, would <br />provide two exercise units proposed to be placed in McIntire <br />Park and Rives park. Mr. German stated that the City would <br />have to provide a total of $5,226 for shipping and matching <br />funds. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano questioned whether such equipment was <br />included on the Rives Park master plan and whether the issue <br />has been discussed by the Parks Committee. <br /> <br /> Mr. German stated that he was planning to bring the <br />matter up with the Parks Committee at its next meeting. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters made a motion to approve the application for <br />the grant on the condition that the equipment and the City <br />providing the $5,226 is endorsed by the Parks Committee. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano seconded the motion, adding that he wanted <br />to ensure that the proposal fits in with the overall park <br />plano Mr. Toscano noted that he wanted to emphasize <br />activities for youths in the parks. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter, a member of~the Parks Committee, stated <br />that she felt the Parks Committee would not be able to <br />discuss the matter at their upcoming meeting because they <br />have a full agenda. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters and Mr. Toscano withdrew their motion to <br />authorize submission of the grant application. <br /> <br />ORDINANCE: AUTHORIZING SALE OF PROPERTY ADJACENT TO 1207 GROVE <br />STREET (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> Mr. Ralph Main, attorney for the owner of the property <br />at 1207 Grove Street, explained that he had discovered that <br />the street had been plated in the late 1800's at which time <br />the City did not acquire title to the property but only <br />maintained a right-of-way. Mr. Main stated that in light of <br />this his client no longer feels that the property is worth <br />the price previously offered and asked that the street be <br />vacated as originally requested. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that she would not support vacating <br />the street because she did not think there would be a public <br />benefit. <br /> <br /> Mr. Main requested that the price of the property be <br />reduced to reflect the revised market value. <br /> <br /> It was agreed that the matter would be deferred until <br />the next meeting. <br /> <br /> <br />
