133 <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated~that she felt the nutrition program <br />might also be moved to a church during the renovation and <br />questioned whether any discussions had taken place with <br />Albemarle County about their role in the nutrition program. <br /> <br /> Ms. Peacock replied that no discussions have taken place <br />with the County regarding the possible renovation of Carver. <br /> <br /> Responding to questions from Mr. Toscano, Ms. Peacock <br />stated that families and adults are charged for the skating <br />program at Carver; approximately twenty people, from either <br />the therapeutic recreation program or the nutrition program, <br />use the ceramics room; the seating capacity in the poolroom <br />was felt to be adequate, with appropriate furniture; and only <br />one bathroom,'available to both males and females, needed to <br />be handicapped accessible as long as there are two other <br />separate bathrooms for males~and females. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano questioned whether other possible locations <br />for the nutrition program had been explored. <br /> <br /> Ms. Peacock replied that the only City owned building <br />which might be appropriate is the former Boys Attention Home <br />which is being reserved in case the joint Boys and Girls <br />Attention Home needed to be divided. Ms. Peacock added that <br />staff have not explored any privately owned properties. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Toscano, Ms. Peacock <br />stated that the donations were specifically tied to <br />renovation of the Carver site. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that she felt renovation of Carver was <br />a positive step from the standpoint of all the programs <br />currently using Carver and felt it would provide a lot of <br />benefits. Ms. Waters stated that she was enthusiastic about <br />proceeding and thanked the donors for their contribution. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she felt it would be important <br />to maintain the ceramics room at the site and felt that the <br />top priorities at the Carver Center were the nutrition <br />program, youth accessibility to the poolroom, and cabaret <br />functions. Ms. Slaughter recommended that staff explore <br />housing some of the other programs currently at Carver at <br />other recreation centers in order to better utilize all of <br />the space. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards questioned whether Council wanted to hold a <br />public hearing on the issue. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter recommended that the affected parties sit <br />down with staff to discuss and fine tune the'proposals. Ms. <br />Slaughter stated that she would be willing to participate in <br />these discussions. <br /> <br /> The majority of Council agreed with Ms. Slaughter's <br />recommendation. <br /> <br />REPORT: <br /> <br />REPORT <br /> <br />CONSIDERATION OF MCINTIRE BUILDING COMMITTEE FUTURE USE <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she would like.to hear the <br />Historical Society's response to the McIntire Building <br />Future Use Committee's goals. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jim Wooten, President of the Albemarle County <br />Historical Society, stated that while the Society's Board has <br />not met to review the specific goals, they do share the <br />philosophy behind the goals. Mr. Wooten briefly responded to <br />the Committee's recommendations: 1) membership expansion, <br />was favored; 2) a permanent memorial to Mr. McIntire was a <br />high priority; 3) the Board is committed to expanding the <br />exhibits and making them accessible to the public; 4) the <br />Society is currently involved in collecting oral history <br /> <br /> <br />
