Edwards, Mr. Wooten
stated that there are currently no minorities on the
Society's Board. Mr. Wooten stated that the Society's is
endeavoring to celebrate the diversity of the charlottesville
community and felt that a more visible site would help this
effort.

Ms. Waters stated that she felt the Committee's goals
and vision for the Society~were important and recommended
that the Society consider establishing a program committee
and elevate and focus on black history. Ms. Waters
recommended that the Society Board discuss the Committee's
goals and provide a written response back to the Council.

Mr. Wooten stated that two new committees have already
been planned: funding raising and programming and noted that
two interns will be working for the Society in the fall, one
of whom will focus on black history.

Responding to a question from Mr. Vandever, Mr. Wooten
stated that six new Board members are scheduled to be elected
in late November.

Mr. Hendrix recommended that representatives from the
Historical Society and the City sit down to discuss and
negotiate financial issues as well as the goals recommended
by the Committee°

Ms. Waters stated that she wanted to make sure that
commitments made regarding the use of the McIntire building
come from the Society's Board and would like to know how the
Board proposes to achieve the goals and the time frame
involved.

Responding to a question from Mr. Toscano, Mr. Wooten
stated that the Society could use the rent from its current
site at 220 Court Square to offset the operating costs at the
McIntire Building.

Mr. Toscano stated that he was not ready to make a
decision regarding the McIntire building until he was
comfortable with the Carver decision.

Ms. Slaughter stated that she had visited the McIntire
building again and did not feel that it was possible for the
space to be used by the Historical Society and others as
well. Ms. Slaughter stated that she concurred in general
with the Committee's recommendation that renting the building
to the Historical Society would be the best use of the space,
but she wanted to see the Board's proposal before making a
final decision.

Mr. Vandever stated that he was not ready to make a
decision regarding the McIntire building until he saw that
the nutrition program was taken care of.

Responding to a question from Ms. Waters, Ms. Rosalyn
Berne, Chair of the McIntire Library Future Use Committee,
stated that the Committee had estimated that $500 a month
would be what the City would need to receive in rent to
maintain the McIntire building, but an alternative would be
to reduce the rent to $100 a month and make the tenant
responsible for maintenance of the building, which was what
the Committee recommended for the Historical Society.

It was agreed that staff would meet with the Historical
Society regarding financial issues and the Historical Society
