242 <br /> <br /> Mr. Vandever stated that he felt increasing teacher <br />salaries should be a priority but he could not support the <br />goat of having teacher salaries be the highest within a 100 <br />mile radius and instead felt that the goal should be to have <br />the salaries be competitive. Mr. Vandever added this his <br />goal would ~e to.reduce the.student/teacher ratio to 15 t° 1. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she would put the emphasis on <br />teacher salaries being competitive with those in Albemarle <br />County. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards stated that he felt it might eventually be <br />necessary to either have a tax increase or cut the school <br />budget in order~ to give significant teacher salary increaSes. <br />Rev. Edwards added that if the stUdent/teacher ratio was <br />decreased to 15 to 1 more space would be needed in the <br />schools and felt that a 20 to t ratio was ideal. Rev. <br />Edwards also stated that he felt increases in general City <br />salaries and teacher salaries should be equitable. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty stated that she hoped the reading <br />initiatives could be continued. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she did not think that <br />increases in City employees' salaries and teacher salaries <br />needed to be the same. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter and Mr. Vandever agreed that reading <br />initiatives and teacher salaries were important. <br /> <br /> Th~~ n g~ was a dj our ned. <br />President ~ <br /> <br /> ....
