27 <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters questioned the amount of emphasis given in <br />the Strategic Plan to student writing and Ms. Arletta Dimberg <br />of the School Administration, replied that major emphasis has <br />been given to student writing in the past two years. <br /> <br /> Responding to questions from Ms. Slaughter, Ms. Dimberg <br />stated that the gifted program will be more inclusive and <br />will strive to identify more specific abilities rather than <br />general aptitude, and more attention will be given to <br />monitoring and evaluating special education programs. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano raised questions about teacher compensation <br />and Dr. McGeehan acknowledged that compensation for teachers <br />in the intermediate steps are inadequate and added that he <br />felt it was important to connect compensation with incentives <br />and accomplishments. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards recommended that a Mayor's Day be <br />established in the schools, with students holding mock <br />elections and dealing with community issues. <br /> <br /> The Council and School Board members reacted favorably <br />to the suggestion for a Mayor's Day and staff was requested <br />to further investigate the matter. <br /> <br /> Rev.
