Edwards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. <br />Toscano, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards explained that the work session was being <br />held with members of the Drug Advisory Board to discuss the <br />role of the Advisory Board and the Drug Coordinator. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters suggested that Council also discuss how the <br />Drug Coordinator and Advisory Board could work with Council <br />to evaluate programs. <br /> <br />Role of Drug Advisory Board <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that she felt the Advisory Board <br />should advise Council and staff on initiatives that have been <br />put in place and provide a forum to bring forward additional <br />ideas. <br /> <br /> Ms. Priscilla Whiting, temporary AdvisOry Board <br />Co-chair, stated that she has received the following comments <br />from community members regarding the City's drug efforts: <br />support exists in the community for efforts of the Drug <br />Coordinator, some friction exists between the community and <br />the Police Department, the recreational programs put in place <br />recently have been good, and generally some improvement has <br />been seen since last year. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano' stated that he felt the membership <br />of the Advisory Board should be broadbased in order to better <br />reach out into the community. <br /> <br /> Mr. Harry Henderson, Advisory Board member, stated that <br />he felt the drug situation is worse in neighborhoods, with <br />out of town drug dealers are more prevalent now than in the <br />past. Mr. Henderson added that he felt it was important for <br />the Drug Coordinator and Advisory Board to be aware of the <br />what is going on in the neighborhoods and that the Drug <br />Coordinator should act as a bridge between the City and the <br />neighborhoods. <br /> <br /> Mr. James Peterson, Advisory Board member, stated that <br />the Board had discussed the advisability of holding future <br />meetings in City neighborhoods in an effort to spread <br />knowledge to the community. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters requested that Council be provided with <br />information which would reflect results of:recent drug <br />initiatives such as numbers of children in foster care, <br />numbers of drug related cases in the j~ail, and waiting lists <br />for treatment of drug dependency. <br /> <br /> <br />
