103 Mr. Ron Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, listed the following areas which will be considered by the Drop-Out Task Force: 1) development of an historical profile of past dropouts in Charlottesville and of a uniform definition of dropouts; 2) examination of current attendance and pupil accounting practices and procedures; 3) identifica- of the potential dropout; 4) review of current research and literature on dropouts and programs of prevention and intervention; 5) identification and assessment of current school programs, prevention and intervention strategies and practices; 6) coordination and networking between and among the schools, community agencies, organizations and businesses on dropout prevention; and 7) staff development and inservice opportunities and activities. Dr. McGeehan listed several areas of emphasis for the next year for the City Schools, including the following: totally revisiting the alternative education program, especially as it relates to the drop-out issue; increasing parental involvement in the schools and their role in advising the SUperintendent and School Board; looking into multi-cultural education and race relations and development a five year plan to find ways to be effective with these students; assuring the academic liberal arts studies are as effective and dynamic as possible; examining decision.making regarding teaching and learning. Responding to a question from Ms. Waters, Dr. McGeehan stated that his goal will be to reduce the drop-out rate by 2% in the next year. Mr. Hendrix stated that the Schools will play an important role in drug education. Mr. Buck recommended that the resources~of the University of Virginia School of Education be used by the Drug Task Force. Ms. Mary Reese, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, stated that the four-year old program is in its second year and is serving 45 students. The- meeting was adjourned. COUNCIL CHAMBER - September 18, 1989 Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Mr. BuCk, Rev. Edwards (arrived late), Mr. Towe, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. MINUTES On motion by Mr. Towe, seconded by Mr. Buck, the minutes of the August 16th meeting were approved as presented, with Mr. VandeVer abstaining and Rev. EdwardS absent for the vote. On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded by Mr. Towe, the minutes of the August 28th meeting were approved as presented, with Rev. Edwards absent for the vote. On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded bY Mr~ Towe, the minutes of the September 5th meeting were approved as presented, with Rev. Edwards absent for the vote.
