173 <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter made a motion to approve the resolution, <br />with the paragraph concerning JAUNT's fare and efficiency <br />deleted. Ms. Waters seconded the motion and the resolution <br />was unanimously approved, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS,'there is a continuing need to provide mass <br />transit in our area, as evidenced by recent appeals by the <br />public to continue Charlottesville Transit Service Route 8 <br />from Greenbrier to Piedmont Virginia Community College; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there is a continuing need for accessible <br />transit for the disabled, as seen by the outpouring of <br />support for continuation of low fares for JAUNT riders; <br /> <br /> BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the City Council of the <br />City of Charlottesville, Virginia supports U. S. House <br />Resolution 1079 to authorize funds for mass transportation <br />programs, especially for support of accessible <br />transportation. <br /> <br /> We commend Representative L. F. Payne for his <br />sponsorship of the bill and urge support by the rest of the <br />Virginia COngressional delegation as well as by the House <br />Committee on Public Works and Transportation and by the <br />Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee. <br /> <br /> We resolve to write to send copies of this resolution to <br />members of the Virginia Congressional delegation and to the <br />Chairs of the two Congressional committees to urge support <br />for this legislation. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION: SUPPORTING FEDERAL RE-REGULATION OF CABLE TELEVISION <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter presented a resolution supporting federal <br />re-regulation of cable television. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Mr. Vandever, <br />the resolution supporting federal re-regulation of cable <br />television was unanimously approved. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Charlottesville <br />have registered their strong complaints about the costs and <br />quality of cable service in Charlottesville, Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville intends to use <br />whatever authority it has in its franchiSe ability to gain <br />the best possible service for area residents; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, local elected officials throughout the nation <br />are urging re-regulation of cable by the Congress to protect <br />consumers from monopolistic practices by the cable television <br />industry; <br /> <br /> NOW~ THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of <br />the City of Charlottesville supports legislation to enact a <br />cable re-regulation bill in the U. S. Congress; and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of thi§ .resolu~ion'~ <br />be sent to the Virginia Congressional delegation and to <br />Representative Edward Markey, Chair, House Telecommunications <br />and Finance Subcommittee as well as to the Chairs of the <br />Senate and House Commerce Committees. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter noted that the week of April 7th through <br />13th had been proclaimed Week of the Young Child. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Ms. Waters, <br />Council unanimously voted to meet in executive session as <br />authorized by Section 2.1-344 (a)(1) and (3) of the Virginia <br />Freedom of Information Act for the purpose of discussion of <br />personnel matters and for the purpose of considering the <br />acquisition or use of real property for public purpose, or <br /> <br /> <br />
