258 <br /> <br /> the next meeting for consideration. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: ~2,500 - DONATION TO THERAPEUTIC, RECREATION <br />PROGRAM (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> The $2,500 appropriation of the donation to the <br /> Therapeutic Recreation Program which was offered at the July <br /> 1st meeting was approved by the following vote. Ayes: Rev. <br /> Edwards, ~Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano, Mr. Vandever, Ms. <br /> Waters. NoeS: None ., <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br /> Charlottesville, Virginia, that the sum of $2,500.00, <br /> received as an anonymous donation to the Therapeutic <br /> Recreation.Program in.the Parks & Recreation Department for <br /> the purpose of supporting the "Supper Club Program," in which <br /> groups of disabled individuals are taken out to eat in local <br /> restaurants in order to teach social and leisure skills and <br /> provide respite to the,parents, ~is hereby appropriated to <br /> General Fund account 05-172-072137-51101 for such purpose. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: $2,400 - VIRGINIA COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS GRANT <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix stated that in the past the Virginia <br />Commission for the Arts grant has been divided between the <br />Piedmont Council of the Arts and the Virginia Discovery <br />Museum based on the formula of funding from~the City. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that she previously supported dividing <br /> the grant based on the funding from the City, but felt that <br /> the grant should be evenly divided this year. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms..Waters, seconded by Mr. Vandever, the <br /> $2,400 .appropriation of the Virginia commission for the Arts <br /> grant, divided equally between the Piedmont Council of the <br /> Arts and the Virginia Discovery Museum, was offered and <br /> carried over to the next meeting for consideration. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: $12,600 - INDEPENDENT LIVING GRANT <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix stated that the grant was awarded to the <br /> City to help older children in foster care develop <br /> independent living skills. <br /> <br /> The $12,600 appropriation of the Independent Living <br /> grant was~offered and carried over to the next meeting for <br /> consideration, 'r ~ <br /> <br />RESOLUTION: ~EXTENSION OF LOANS TO VIRGINIA DISCOVERY MUSEUM' <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix explained that the City has made two loans <br />to the Virginia Discovery Museum, of $20,000 and $30,000, and <br />the Museum is not able at this time to make repayment and <br />staff are recommending that both loans be combined and <br />extended to June 30, 1992. <br /> <br /> Mr. Kirby Capps, President of the Virginia Discovery <br />Museum Board, thanked Council for the City's support. Mr. <br />Capps stated that the Museum had a 46% increase in visitation <br />last year even though it operated on a decreased budget and <br />programs had been expanded as required by the lease with the <br />City. Mr. Capps explained that staff and Board energy during <br />the past year had been put into renovation and expansion of <br />the programs and the Board intends to make raising funds to <br />repay the loan a priority in the coming year. <br /> <br /> Mr. Vandever asked how much the Museum had spent on <br />renovation of the building. <br /> <br /> Mr. Capps stated that a total of $66,442 had been spent <br />on renovation. <br /> <br /> - Ms. Peppy Linden, Director of the Museum, stated that <br /> <br /> <br />
