• <br />• <br />\J <br />Section 4-22. Confinement or destruction of dogs and cats <br />suspected of having rabies. <br />(a) Dogs or cats found within the City reasonably <br />having rabies or exhibiting the common symptoms of such <br />taken forthwith into custody by the animal control offi, <br />suspected of <br />disease shall be <br />police officer and impounded either at the City pound or at a <br />private veterinarian's establishment in solitary confinement and <br />kept under competent observation for a-ger#ed-a€-fearteen-daps <br />such time as may be necessary to determine whether they are <br />afflicted with rabies. <br />(b) At the time any such dog or cat is impounded, an attempt <br />shall be made to find-eet discover whether or -net the dog or cat <br />has been vaccinated previously ineenlated against rabies. If it is <br />found that such dog or cat has not been vaccinated effectively iaeeetated, <br />then such dog or cat shall be ineeniated so vaccinated by a licensed <br />veterinarian on the last day of the above-mentlened observation <br />period described in subsection (a) above unless the animal is humanely <br />destroved pursuant to subsection (c) below. <br />(c) The animal control officer may cause to be destroyed <br />humanely any dog or cat which, in h#s the opinion of a veterinarian, <br />has rabies, and or any dog or cat which is in need of confinement <br />pursuant to subsection (a) above but such confinement is impossible or <br />impracticable because there apparently is no owner or for other <br />reasons. In such event the animal control officer shall arrange <br />to have the head of such dog or cat examined for the purpose of <br />confirming rabies. If the opinion of a veterinarian as to whether <br />an animal has rabies is not reasonably obtainable, the animal control <br />officer may act on his or her own opinion. <br />(d) All expenses in connection with the provisions of this <br />section shall be borne by the owner of the dog or cat in question. <br />Section 4-23. Confinement of dog or cat that has bitten person. <br />{a} Upon information to the animal control officer that a dog <br />or cat has bitten a person, it shall be the duty of the animal <br />control officer, upon ascertaining the identity of such dog or cat, <br />to direct that it be confined for a period of net -fess -than ten (10) <br />days and-net-mere-then-fertp-f4ve-daps, such confinement to be <br />either in the City pound or with a veterinarian approved by the <br />health an officer of the Thomas Jefferson Health District, as the <br />person who owns or controls such dog or cat shall select; provided, <br />that the person who owns or controls such dog or cat shall bear <br />the cost of any such confinement with a veterinarian. It shall <br />further be the duty of the animal control officer, immediately <br />
