• AN ORDINANCE <br />TO AMEND AND REORDAIN SECTION 11-5 OF THE CODE <br />OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE (1976), AS AMENDED, <br />TO STRENGTHEN REQUIREMENTS FOR SMOKE DETECTORS <br />IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS. <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, <br />Virginia: <br />That section 11-5 of the Code of the City of Charlottesville <br />(1976), as amended, is hereby amended and reordained as follows: <br />Section 11-5. Smoke detectors in certain buildings. <br />(a) By no later than January 1, 1983, smoke detectors shall <br />be installed by owners at their expense in the following structures <br />or buildings eeastrueted-Brier-te-tie-adegtien-a€-tke-Bni€arm <br />Statewide-Buil&img-cede: <br />(1) Any multi:-€amilp building containing four one or <br />more dwelling units; <br />• (2) Any hotel or motel regularly used, offered for or <br />intended to be used to provide overnight sleeping accommodations <br />for one or more persons; and <br />(3) Rooming houses regularly used, offered for or <br />intended to be used to provide overnight sleeping accommodations <br />en&-Nhieh-eeatain-fear-er-mere-waits. <br />(b) Smoke detectors installed pursuant to this section shall <br />be installed in conformance with the provisions of the Uniform <br />Statewide Building Code. Such smoke detectors may be either <br />battery operated or A.C.-powered units. <br />(c) With respect to multi -family buildings containing four <br />one or more dwelling units, the owner of each unit which is rented <br />or leased, at the beginning of each tenancy and at least annually <br />thereafter, shall furnish the tenant with a certificate that all <br />required smoke detectors are present, have been inspected and are <br />in good working order.
