Approved May 19, 1997 <br />AN ORDINANCE <br />AMENDING AND REORDAINING ARTICLES I AND II <br />OF CHAPTER 32 (VEHICLES FOR HIRE) <br />RELATING TO REGISTRATION, INSPECTION AND FEES <br />FOR VEHICLES FOR HIRE. <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that: <br />1. Sections 32-1, et seq. of Articles I and II of Chapter 32 of the Code of the City of <br />Charlottesville (1990), as amended, are hereby amended and reordained, as follows: <br />ARTICLE 1. IN GENERAL <br />Sec. 32-1. Violations of Chapter. <br />(a) Unless otherwise specifically provided, a violation of any provision of this Chapter shall <br />constitute a Class 1 misdemeanor, and upon conviction of such a violation a person shall be fined <br />not more than one hundred dollars ($100) for the first offense and not more than five hundred <br />dollars ($500) for each subsequent offense. <br />(b) The chief of police or a police officer duly designated by him shall investigate all complaints <br />• of violations of this Chapter and shall maintain records of all such complaints and investigations. <br />Sec. 32-2. Registration of vehicles for hire. <br />(a) All P passenger motor vehicles for hire, including all Taxicabs, operating within the city or <br />which have a terminal within the city shall be registered by the owner with the chief of police, <br />as follows: The appheant shall staie whether- the vehiele will be driven selely by the appliea <br />erre !easeder leaned to other a eeatef.ref driven by epees Of the applieana.The <br />applieant shall present a eapy ef a etiffent business lieense issued by the eeffffflissieRe <br />LlI On or before May 1st of each calendar year, the vehicle's owner shall apply to the chief <br />of police for registration of the vehicle. The applicant shall state whether the vehicle will <br />be driven solely by the applicant, will be leased to or otherwise utilized by another <br />operator, or will be driven by employees of the applicant. The applicant shall present <br />a copy of a current business license issued by the commissioner of revenue authorizing <br />the applicant to do business in the city. <br />(2) The chief of police shall conduct an investigation with respect to the vehicle and the <br />matters set forth within the application for its registration, for the purpose of determining <br />whether or not the vehicle poses any threat to the health, safety, welfare or comfort of <br />the vehicle's driver(s), passengers, or theeg neral public. <br />
