• RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, sixty-one years ago, on August 26, 1920, after
many decades of arduous work by early American feminists, a
step toward full equality for all Americans was taken as the
-19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, became
part of the United States Constitution; and
WHEREAS that victory is cause for our celebration in
recognition and honor of the women and men who struggled
to achieve it; and
WHEREAS feminists have been engaged in another struggle
since 1923.to win passage by Congress and ratification by
the states of the Equal Rights Amendment as the next step
toward full constitutional equality for women and men; and
WHEREAS this is the final year of the ERA ratification
campaign and the need for all supporters of equality to be
involved has become increasingly urgent as it is perhaps
the last chance for full equality under the law in this
century; and
WHEREAS the National Organization for Women (NOW),
as a major proponent of the ERA , has declared a National
Walkathon for Equal Rights, in observance of the long and
strenuous journey to full equality for women and men; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville,
Virginia, that August 26, 1981, is hereby proclaimed as
Women's Equality Day in support of those who have labored
for equality over the past generations and to endorse the
critical need for ratification of the ERA before June 30,
1982.
