EXHIBIT A <br />Prepared February 23, 1998 <br />0 CHARLOTTESVILLE <br />Historic Districts <br />Design Review Guidelines <br />DEMOLITION AND MOVING <br />Historic buildings are irreplaceable community assets and once they are gone, they are gone <br />forever. With each successive demolition or removal, the integrity of a historic district is further <br />eroded. Therefore, the demolition or moving of any <br />"protected property" as described in City Code 04-566, et seg., hereinafter the City's "Historic <br />Preservation Ordinance", should be considered very carefully before approval is given. <br />Charlottesville's Zoning Historic Preservation Ordinance contains provisions that restrict the <br />property owner's right to demolish or remove such "protected buildings properties." defiaed-in <br />outside these distriets�. <br />The following review crieria forrg anon or r denying a request for demolition or removal should <br />be used for mny protected (eauteibuting) buildings that are properties designated as such by the <br />Citv's Historic Preservation Ordinance. including those in the West Main Street Design Control <br />- _ _ .rrrveer <br />kup M. <br />In addition,, The West Main Street esrrider Design District buildings have been classified as <br />"contributing" or "noncontributing". These categories are shown on the map found in Chapter 1, <br />"Before Yatt Begin lk)ttr ." of the BAR's Design Guidelines and defined in more detail in <br />that chapter. <br />Plans to demolish or remove a protected property must be approved by the BAR or, on appeal, <br />by the City Council after consultation with the BAR. Upon receipt of an application for <br />demolition or removal of a structure, the BAR has 60 days to either approve or deny the request. <br />If the request is denied and the owner appeals to the City Council, the Council can either approve <br />• the request or find that the structure is of such historic, architectural, or cultural significance that <br />Charlottesville Historic District Design Guidelines: Demolition and Moving 1 <br />
