• RESOLUTION <br />IN SUPPORT OF THE THOMAS JEFFERSON VENTURE <br />REGIONAL COMPETITIVENESS ACT SUBMISSION FOR CERTIFICATION <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville has supported the creation of the Thomas Jefferson <br />Venture through the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission, and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville has committed staff time and effort to developing the <br />Strategic Plan, and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville committed funds for an initial study of the Zion <br />Crossroads area as a result of cooperative efforts undertaken through the partnership with <br />Louisa and Fluvanna Counties and is in continuing discussion with the two localities <br />regarding how a cooperative venture might occur in the future through the Competitiveness <br />Program, and <br />WHEREAS, the Heritage Tourism Program is consistent with efforts underway in the City to <br />preserve and protect historic areas such as Court Square, to which the City has committed <br />funds for preservation and promotion of the Square as an area meeting heritage criteria, and <br />WHEREAS, through the Regional Tourism Council the City of Charlottesville commits <br />• $300,000 per year for regional tourism efforts which will be enhanced through Heritage <br />Tourism, and <br />WHEREAS, creating jobs for City residents and rural residents is an important part of the City's <br />own strategic plan where the City is committing significant resources to the revitalization of <br />West Main Street, and <br />WHEREAS, the creation of the regional housing fund is important to addressing the needs of <br />employees in the region in relationship to their incomes, and <br />WHEREAS, expansion of the successful role the Charlottesville Albemarle School Business <br />Alliance in linking K-12 students with the real world of employment in all fields, and <br />WHEREAS, the Piedmont Virginia Community College is the prime workforce development <br />institution, providing special training to incoming industries, tailoring training opportunities <br />to workforce employment opportunities, and areas of the health care industry, <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Charlottesville City Council does hereby <br />endorse the Thomas Jefferson Venture Strategic Plan and commits itself to continue the <br />cooperative relationships formed under this unique collaborative. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council requests the Virginia Department of <br />• Housing and Community Development to confer certification on the Thomas Jefferson <br />Venture. <br />Approved by Council <br />May 17, 1999 <br />rk of City Council <br />
