0 <br />RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS the University of Virginia is the Charlottesville area's largest employer with nearly <br />11,000 salaried employees on its payroll; and <br />WHEREAS tens of thousands of visitors from throughout the state, nation and beyond enhance <br />tourism to Charlottesville each year while attending academic, cultural, athletics, and other <br />events sponsored by the University; and <br />WHEREAS the preceding considerations, as well as the presence of approximately 18,000 <br />students and 645,000 Medical Center patient visits each year, confirm the University of Virginia <br />as the economic engine of this community; and <br />WHEREAS the University's healthcare facilities, libraries, assistance to K-12 schools, <br />technological resources, job training and continuing education programs, urban planning <br />expertise, and other public services are readily available to the Charlottesville community; and <br />WHEREAS the University of Virginia's continued success and stability are essential to the City <br />of Charlottesville; and <br />• WHEREAS the University's strategic plan relies on both public and private funding for its future <br />development, and <br />WHEREAS the City Council of Charlottesville has reviewed and supports the University of <br />Virginia's 2000-2002 biennial budget request to the Commonwealth of Virginia, <br />BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council urges the Governor and the General Assembly to <br />provide funding to support the University of Virginia's budget request and to pay all state <br />employees fair and competitive salaries. <br />Approved by Council <br />December 6, 1999 <br />L <br />C rk of City Co ncil <br />0 <br />
