• A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF <br />RENAMING THE CHARLOTTESVILLE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER <br />AS THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER <br />OF CHARLOTTESVILLE <br />WHEREAS, on April 1, 2004 the Charlottesville City School Board passed <br />a Resolution to rename the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center as The Martin <br />Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center of Charlottesville; and, <br />WHEREAS, prior to his assassination on April 4, 1968 Dr. King led the <br />non-violent struggle for civil rights, equal justice under the law and human dignity <br />for all people in this country, regardless of class or color; and, <br />WHEREAS, Dr. King's life and work embodied one of our most cherished <br />and important principles, that all people are created equal; and, <br />WHEREAS, people of all races and nationalities benefited from Dr. King's <br />courage, passion, dedication, vision and sacrifice, which continues to serve as an <br />inspiration to all those who fight against inequality and racial and social injustice; <br />and, <br />• WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the City of Charlottesville honor Dr. <br />King, a true national hero, and his lasting and invaluable contributions to this <br />country by naming a public building in his memory. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia that the Council strongly endorses and supports the <br />renaming of the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center as The Martin Luther <br />King, Jr. Performing Arts Center of Charlottesville. <br />Approved by Council <br />April 5, 2004 <br />rk of City Council <br />n <br />LJ <br />
