Resolution Supporting Safe Routes to School Grant Application <br />• For Venable School <br />Charlottesville City Council <br />Whereas, the Department of Transportation has initiated a Safe Routes to School program <br />to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school safely; and <br />Whereas, the City of Charlottesville intends to provide safe pedestrian facilities, <br />especially along and across major streets and near schools and recreation facilities; and <br />Whereas, Venable Elementary School recently benefited from a new point of access from <br />the south when an old fence was opened up, and a walkway to the school will complete <br />this new link; and <br />Whereas, this program requires no local match money; now, therefore, <br />Be It Resolved that the City of Charlottesville endorses an application to the Virginia <br />Department of Transportation for Safe Routes to School funding to build a <br />walking/biking trail to Venable Elementary School to improve the safety of those <br />walking and biking to school. <br />• Be It Further Resolved that the City of Charlottesville accepts the responsibility of <br />maintenance of the proposed infrastructure in perpetuity. <br />Adopted on this 18`h Day of December, 2006 <br />.tea <br />JeaUi Cox, Clerk of Council <br />• <br />
