Resolution Supporting Safe Routes to School Grant Application <br />• For Buford School <br />Charlottesville City Council <br />Whereas, the Department of Transportation has initiated a Safe Routes to School program <br />to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school safely; and <br />Whereas, the City of Charlottesville intends to provide safe pedestrian facilities, <br />especially along and across major streets and near schools and recreation facilities; and <br />Whereas, Buford Middle School has a Safe Routes to School Plan ready for adoption; <br />and <br />Whereas, Buford Middle School is attended by every student in the system for grades 5 <br />and 6 and is the site of the Smith Recreation Center shared by the Boys and Girls Club; <br />and <br />Whereas, this program requires no local match money; now, therefore, <br />Be It Resolved by the Council for the City of Charlottesville that the City of <br />• Charlottesville endorses an application to the Virginia Department of Transportation for <br />Safe Routes to School funding to make infrastructure improvements to the streets around <br />Buford Middle School to improve the safety of those walking and biking to school. <br />Be It Further Resolved that the City of Charlottesville accepts the responsibility of <br />maintenance of the proposed infrastructure in perpetuity. <br />Adopted on this 18`h day of December, 2006 <br />Jea e ox, Clerk of Cou cil <br />U <br />
