Freedom of Information Act. <br />,~. ~ eetlng was adjOurned. <br /> <br /> NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE couNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Wednesday, <br />June 8, 1988 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Basement Conference Room. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon meeting with SChool Board <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR BY Jeanne Cox (signed) <br /> <br /> BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM - June 8, 1988 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the <br />following members present: Mr. Barnes, Mr. Buck, Mrs. <br />Gleason, Dr. Hall, Mr. Towe. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Pezzoli, Chairman of the School Board, <br />recognized the outgoing members of Council, Mr. Barnes, Mrs. <br />Gleason, and Dr. Hall and commended them for their service <br />to the community. <br /> <br /> Dr. Vincent Cibbarelli, Superintendent of Schools, <br />stated that legal questions concerning the After-School <br />Program (CLAS/S) have been satisfied and the program will <br />be operated through a contractual agreement between the City <br />and the school syStem. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ron Hutchinson from the School administration, <br /> described the Alternative Education Program. Mr. Hutchinson <br /> listed the following objectives of the program: 1) Promote <br /> and improve mastery of basic academic skills; 2) Develop <br /> within students a sense of self-esteem and a feeling of <br /> responsibility to others; 3) Expand students' horizons and <br /> raise their levels of aspiration; 4) Encourage students <br /> to practice good health habits and to maintain physical <br /> fitness and mental alertness; 5) Improve interpersonal <br /> relations of students With peers and adults; 6) Enable <br /> students to acquire a high school diploma, a certificate, <br /> and/or complete G.E.D. requirements if appropriate; and <br /> 7) Prepare students for career opportunities and initial <br /> entry into the job market. Mr. Hutchinson stated that the <br /> following students will be served in the program: 1) <br /> Academically able students who behave in a negative and <br /> disruptive manner; 2) Students who are significantly <br /> deficient in basic skills and who demonstrate feelings of <br /> anger, hostility, and alienation towards fellow students, <br /> teachers, and the school administration; and 3) Students who <br /> dislike school and cannot cope with their personal problems <br /> as evidenced by skipping school, cutting classes, <br /> inattentiveness, and failing grades. <br /> <br /> Mr. Pezzoli stated that the Alternative Education <br />Program has been approved by the School Board. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli stated that a grant has been submitted <br />to the State and the Private Industries Council which, if <br />awarded, will increase certain components of the program, <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Towe, Mr. Hutchinson <br />stated that an evaluation of each students at the end of the <br />semester will be conducted to determine the 'effectiveness of <br />the program. <br /> <br />147 <br /> <br /> <br />
