Mr. Hendrix.stated that the Sheriff has <br /> made a request of the State Compensation Board for an <br /> additional bailiff, but the request was not granted. The <br /> Compensation Board,s decision will be appealed, and <br /> Council's support of the request is being asked to aid in <br /> the appeal. Mr. Hendrix noted that if the Compensation <br /> Board does not grant the request for an additional bailiff, <br /> then the position will probably have t° be funded out of <br /> local funds. <br /> <br /> On motion by Rev. Edwards, seconded by Mr. Towe, the <br /> resolution supporting the request of the Sheriff to the <br /> Compensation Board for an additional bailiff was unanimously <br /> approved by Council. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION: AUTHORIZING CITY MANAGER TO SIGN AGREEMENT FOR <br />PURCHASE OF TURNAROUND LAND ON SUNSET AVENUE <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded by Mr. Towe, the <br /> resolution authorizing the City Manager to sign the <br /> agreement for the purchase of turnaround land on Sunset <br /> Avenue was unanimously approved by Council. <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia that the City Manager or his <br />designee is hereby authorized to execute on behalf of the <br />City a letter agreement dated July 20, 1988 between Joseph W. <br />Wright, Jr..and the City evidencing consent by Joseph Wright <br />to sell the City 4,304 square feet of land owned by the <br />Sunset Land Trust in order to construct a turnaround on <br />Sunset Avenue. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor is hereby <br />authorized to execute a deed and any other documents <br />necessary to effect a closing. <br /> <br />ORDINANCE: SETTLEMENT PROCESS FOR SMALL CLAIMS (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> The ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE AMENDING AND <br />REORDAINING SECTION 2-124 OF ARTICLE XVIII OF CHAPTER 2 OF <br />THE CODE OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, 1976, AS AMENDED, <br />RELATING TO ADMINISTRATION OF CLAIMS AGAINST THE CITY," <br />which was offered at the July 18th meeting, was approved by <br />the following vote. Ayes: Mr. Buck, Rev. Edwards, Mr. <br />Towe, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. Noes: None. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Ms. Kay Peaslee expressed concern about people riding <br />bicycles on the downtown mall. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix stated that bicycles are prohibited on the <br />downtown mall and the ordinance is enforced by police <br />officers when the offense is observed. <br /> <br />OTHER BUSINESS <br /> <br /> On motion by Rev.
