Jefferson/Little High St.) <br /> <br />RECOGNITION: OUTGOING PVCC PRESIDENT DEBORAH DICROCE <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter read a resolution recognizing the contributions of outgoing Piedmont <br />Virginia CommunitY College President Deborah DiCroce. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Toscano, seconded by Ms. Richards, the resolution was unanimously <br />approved. <br /> <br />PUBLIC BEARING/ORDINANCE: RELOCATING FIREHOUSE PRECINCT <br />POLLING PLACE TO TONSLER RECREATION CENTER AND II£NAMt~G <br />PRECINCT <br /> <br /> Mr. Leroy Hamlett, a member of the Electoral Board, explained that the Board went <br />through a long process before recommending that the Firehouse Precinct be relocated. <br /> <br /> Ms. Cheri Lewis, Chair of the Electoral Board, explained that the Board has considered <br />changing the Firehouse Precinct for four years and is recommending it be relocated to the <br />Tonsler Park Community Center. Ms. Lew4s said that the conditions at the Firehouse are <br />bad, there is no air conditioning or heat, noise levels are high, and vehicular accessibility is <br />difficult. Ms. Lewis explained that if the relocation is approved by Council then the <br />relocation goes to the Justice Department for approval. Ms. Lewis said that the Electoral <br />Board has recommended that the precinct be named either Tonsler or Drewary Brown, and <br />noted that Charlottesville has a tradition of naming its precincts after their locations. <br /> <br />The public hearing was opened. <br /> <br /> Ms. Betty Lovetace, 100 Ridge Street, said that she is an election worker at the <br />Firehouse Precinct and is unable to Climb the steps to the restroom and the noise levels are <br />too high. Ms. Lovetack said she supports the move to Tonsler Community Center. <br /> <br /> Mr. Wyatt Johnson, 1005 Ridge Street, said that while he voted against the move to <br />Tonsler in a survey circulated by the Electoral Board, he realizes that the majority of <br />respondents voted in favor of the move. Mr. Johnson said he supports naming the precinct <br />Tonsler Precinct, and noted that traffic concerns will also exist at Tonsler Park and it may be <br />necessary to get police to help. <br /> <br /> Mr. Joseph Bishop, 315 15th Street, N.W., said that he has worked at Firehouse <br />Precinct as a political volunteer and supports the relocation to improve the safety of workers <br />and voters. Mr. Bishop supported naming the precinct after its location. Mr: Bishop said he <br />hopes that the budget of the Board of Elections will allow individual notices to be mailed <br />notifying people in that precinct of the change. <br /> <br /> Ms. Ida Woodfolk, 111 Hartman's Mill Road, an election worker at Firehouse Precinct, <br />said that there is excessive noise, fumes, poor lighting, no circulation, and wet conditions <br />during rains at the Firehouse Precinct and She supports the relocation to Tonsler and naming <br />the precinct Tonsler. <br /> <br />AS there were no further speakers, the public: hearing was closed. <br /> <br /> <br />
