232 Mr. Cox said that new street construction is mandated by the state to be suburban in width and it is hard to have a smaller road other than through a PUD. Mr. Cox asked if there is a way to redUce the size of roads as we took at new residential housing. Mr. Tolbert said he has just been notified by the Department of Transportation that the City can change the standards to have smaller streets. Mr. Cox said he would like to see successful community involvement, with people able to access information other than just word-based, and asked how staff is planning to involve the public. Mr. Cox suggested that the University, architects and planners be asked to help create maps and other graphic information and that consideration be given to visual preference surveys. Ivlr. Tolbert said that visual information is proposed to be provided and a visual preference survey is being considered. Mr. Slayton said he wants to invite all people in the community to be involved in the process, not just City residems. Ms. Johnson Harris agreed that it would be good to include non-City residents in some of the public sessions, but would prefer to focus on neighborhood issues. Ms. Daugherty expressed concern that there are larger issues facing the City that neighborhood people need to understand, including welfare to work, healthy families, and eahacation efforts/schools, and asked that staff and the Planning Commission make sure those things are presented as they go into the neighborhood meetings. Mr. Tolbert noted that the Planning Commission will be meeting every third Wednesday during the Comprehensive Plan process. Mr. Supler said he h~s that the Mayor brings up a good point about the larger issues facing the City, and suggested that overriding guidelines he presented to neighborhoods. -Mr. Supter said that the Planning Commission will need to focus on the greater good of the City as it develops the pIan. Mr. Cox said there may need to be a series of rceetings with the Housing Authority to get public housing residents involved. Mr. O'Connelt said it wilt be important to set priorities when talking to neighborhoods to avoid long lists and high expectations. Mr. Slayton said the cost of projects will also need to be considered to assure that projects are feasible. The meeting was adjourned.
