Ms. <br />Westcott said 33 applications for the Academy have been received. <br /> <br /> Mr. Joe Johnson, CATEC Director, said that the IT Academy is not a course and <br />students do not get credit for it, but it allows students to take academics and electives <br />they need and to come together for enricb_ment programs. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Daugherty, Ms. Brown said that she feels the <br />schools do a very good job of working with students with learning disabilities regarding <br />vocational education. <br /> <br /> The meeting was adjourned. <br />eresid~e~ /~~ <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - June 5, 2000 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the fo'dowing members present: <br />Mr. Caravati, Mr. Cox, Ms. Daugherty, Ms. Richards, Mr. Toscano. <br /> <br />~COGNITIONS/AWARDS: ARGONEX; "VACATION IN OUR OWN BACK <br />YARD" <br /> <br /> Mr. Maurice Jones, Director of Communications, announced a local tourism <br />initiative being done in conjunction with Albemarle County and the Convention Bureau, <br />"Vacation in Our Own Backyard," and described activities to be held in the City. <br /> <br /> Iris. Lee Catlin, spokesperson for Albemarle County, discussed "Vacation in Our <br />Own Backyard" activities to be held in Albemarle County. <br /> <br /> Ms. Mary Pat Kloene of the Convention Bureau~ said that "Vacation in Our Own <br />Backyard" allows residents to become ambassadors for those visiting Charlottesville and <br />encourages local citizens to participate in tourism activities. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty presented the City's Business Recognition Award to Mr. Sheridan <br />Snyder of Argonex, Inc. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Ms. Michelle Kellerman of the League of Women Voters, announced the public <br />forum to be held on candidates for the Charlottesville School Board in Council Chamber <br />on Thursday, June 8th. <br /> <br /> Mr. Peter Kleeman, 407 Hedge Street, asked Council to make current planning <br />material for the Meadowcreek Parkway available to the public and to notify the public <br />when information is available. <br /> <br /> Ms. Joelle Meniktos-Nolting, 100 Laurel Circle, a student at Charlottesville High <br />School, supported adding a sexual orientation non-discrimination statement for the <br />schools as she feels it is needed for students and teachers, and asked Council to consider <br />this as candidates are considered for the School Board. A number of people in the <br />audience stood in support of Ms. Meniktos-Nolting's co ~mrnents. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Pfaltz said that when he was campaigning for City Council, he found <br />support for a tax deferral program for homeowners, but realizes that it is not allowable <br /> <br /> <br />
