95 <br /> <br />succUmb to the will of her master, and feels that ming the street after Hemings has <br />negatives and long lasting effects that will divide the community. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Gaines, 214 9th St., N.W., presented a petition with more than one <br />hundred signatures supporting naming the street after former Charlottesville native, <br />forrner New York Giants professional football player, and National Hail of Fame <br />inductee, Roosevelt Brown. <br /> <br /> Mr. Blair Hawkins, 702 Belmont Avenue, suggested naming the street for both <br />Sally Hemings and Laura Dowell, a poor white woman whose home on Garrett Street <br />was taken for urban renewal. <br /> <br /> Ms. Margie Lancaster, listing 517 Brown Street as her last residence, suggested <br />that the street be named after Rebecca McGinness because she did a lot for the <br />community and was well respected. Ms. Lancaster said someone should be honored who <br />is worthy of being honored. <br /> <br /> Mr. Henry Wiencek, 1509 Grove Road, said he feels it is a good idea to name the <br />street after Sally Hemings, to recognize the importance of her and her name and as the <br />founder of a great family with history after Monticello. <br /> <br /> Mr. Reed Oechslin, 708 Nalle Street, speaking on behalf of the Fifeville <br />Neighborhood Association, explained that the neighborhood association had asked last <br />summer that the 9tn/10t~ Street connector and the rest of the corridor be named after Sally <br />Hemings, a member of the Monticello slave community Who later lived on the corridor, <br />Ms. Oechstin said this gesture would embrace the nation's past. Mr. Oechslin said that <br />the neighborhood has also asked that a marker be placed at the site explaining who Sally <br />Heming was. <br /> <br /> Ms. Leviania Devinia, a guide at the Ivy Creek Natural Area, suggested that the <br />street be named after Hugh Carr, a freed slave who later purchased the farm that is now <br />the Ivy Creek Natural Area. Ms. De~drfia said that the Carr family has a long legacy in <br />the area, and that Mr. Can' sent all of his six daughters to college, and Greer Elementary <br />School is named after one of them. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herb Porter, Jr., 509 7 I/2 Street, a member ofthe Fifeville Neighborhood <br />Association, said that he is glad'to see all of the historical facts come out about the <br />Hemings family. Mr. Porter supported naming the street after Sally Hemings, who was a <br />mother and a role model, not just the Hemings family. Mr. Porter said Ms. McGinness <br />had asked that a street not be named after her, and he feels we should not disregard what <br />she asked for. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Spears suggested that if Council decide whether or not to name the <br />street Hemings, and if it decides not to, then there should be more discussion about what <br />to name the street. <br /> <br /> Mr. James Burton, 606 Delevan Street, a member of the Fifeville neighborhood, <br />supported naming the street after the Hemings family. Mr. Burton said that the Fifeville <br />neighborhood association meetings are open to the public, including those not in the <br />neighborhood, and many had the opportunity to have input regarding suggestions for <br />naming the street. Mr. Burton said the neighborhood had received word that Ms. <br />McGinness did not want the street named after her, and understands that Roosevelt <br />Brown has not given his permission to have the street named after him. <br /> <br /> Ms. Margie Lancaster said that she was Ms. McGinness' caretaker prior to her <br />death and she told her she would like the street named after her. <br /> <br /> Mr. Kevin Lynch said he would like to support the Fifeville Neighborhood <br />Association in their suggestion to name the street after Sally Hemings as he thinks their <br />recommendation should be respected. <br /> <br /> <br />
