11o <br /> <br /> Ms. Kay Slaughter, former Mayor, speaking also on behalf of former Mayors <br />Alvin Edwards and Tom Vandever, said that Ms. Daugherty has shown a commitment to <br />broad diversity in the community, has been totally committed to children, and has <br />wonderful personal qualities. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty said she has appr~eciated working with people over the past eight <br />years and fbels that the City has a superb staff. Ms. Daugherty said she appreciates the <br />collegiality with fellow Councilors. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty announced that the sale of the district home in Waynesboro is <br />being removed from the agenda as well as the naming of the 9th/10th Street Connector <br />Road to Hemings Street. Ms. Daugherty said the road naming has become too <br />controversial and she feels it needs to be decided by the entire Council. Ms. Daugherty <br />said Councilors have received a lot of feedback about the street in the past few days and <br />do not feel ready to vote on the matter. Ms. Daugherty said there is a possibility that a <br />vote will be taken on the street naming at Council's special June 30th meeting. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. John Pfaltz, 1503 Rugby Road, said he has not received a response from <br />Council about his request that they support legislation that would allow real estate <br />reductions for low income persons and asked when he would receive a response. <br /> <br />Ms. Daugherty suggested that Mr. Pfaltz contact individual Councilors. <br /> <br />PUBLIC HEARING: SCHOOL BOARD APPOINTMENTS <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox reviewed the School Board appointment process, which included notices <br />mailed and advertised in local newspapers, a public discussion by Council, a forum held <br />by the League of Women Voters, answers to questions by candidates posted on the City's <br />website, numerous letters, calls, and e-mails supporting candidates, and this public <br />hearing. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty read the names of the School Board candidates: John Gaines, <br />Robert Hart, Wayne Higgins-Barry, Sue Lewis, Edmund Michie, Christina Rees, Dierdre <br />Smith, Donald Sours, Kristin Szakos, and Muriel Wiggins. <br /> The public hearing was opened. <br /> <br /> Ms. Peter Mclntosh, saluted Council for the process, and spoke for Ned Michie. <br />Mr. Mclntosh said Mr. Michie is always well prepared, listens well, and does his <br />homework. Mr. Mclntosh also supported Tina Rees, who served as co-chair with him of <br />the PTO. He said Ms. Rees has energy and a strong lifelong commitment to low-income <br />and handicapped individuals. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jeanette Rosenberg Perry, 1626 St. Anne's Road, endorsed Dede Smith who <br />she feels successfully bridges the interests of staff, parents and students and has a vast <br />knowledge of the school systerm <br /> <br /> Ms. Kerry Moran, 607 Lexington Avenue, thanked Council for letting the process <br />be opened up, and said she feels many of the candidates should be encouraged to apply <br />again if they are not appointed to the School Board this year. <br /> <br /> Mr. John McCutheon, 1025 Locust Avenue, thanked Council for opening up the <br />process. Mr. McCutheon said that creativity is needed on the School Board, and he <br />supported Dede Smith who he feels understands the schools and works-well with students <br />and staff. He said she also has the ability to re-think positions. Mr. McCutheon said he <br />feels Kristin Szakos has the ability to understand participation in the school system from <br />the bottom up, shows compassion, and has a multi-racial family. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jane Foster, 6 Gildersleeve Wood, said that a strong School Board is needed <br />because the Superintendent is so strong, and supported Kristin Szakos and John Gaines, <br />but said she thinks Council has marvelous candidates. <br /> <br /> <br />
