11t <br /> <br /> Ms. Edith Good, 305 2~a Street, N.W., supported KrL~tin Szakos who is very <br />involved in public education issues. <br /> <br /> Ms. Moji Olaniyan, 709 Village Road, supported Kristin Szakos who is the parent <br />of two African-American children, but who has a record of representing all children. Ms. <br />Olaniyan said Ms. Szakos is very passionate about her beliefs but is very level headed. <br /> <br /> Mr. John baker, 2220 Ridgeway Lane, supported Muriel Wiggins because of her <br />understanding of the education process and her experience ~om other boards. <br /> <br /> Ids. Susan Oberman, 604 Grove Avenue, supported Muriel Wiggins, whom she <br />has known through FOCUS, for her wisdom, depth of knowledge about the education <br />system, and her awareness of the dynamics of the education process. Ms. Oberman said <br />Ms. Wiggins understands the impact of discrimination on individuals and institutions, is <br />respectful of disagreement, and blends passion and compassion. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sheila Haughey, 2408 Hillwood Place, supported Dede Smith for her <br />warmth, caring, and compassion. Ms. Haughey said Ms. Smith is research oriented and <br />understands how decisions impact the community. Ms. Haughey said Ms. Smith can see <br />the big picture and has credibility and integrity. <br /> <br /> Ms. Joanne Kittridge, 1026 Sheridan Avenue, supported Muriel Wiggins because <br />she is an involved member of the community and has training in higher education. <br /> <br /> Ms. Rebecca A~tams, 1428 Ridgecrest Lane, supported Muriet Wiggins. Ms. <br />Adams said she has served on a board with Ms. Wiggins and she listens, absorbs <br />information and then brings unity. Ms. Adams said Ms. Wiggins has the ability to <br />maintain dignity with those with whom she disagrees. <br /> <br /> Mr. Russell Perry, 1626 St. Anne's Road, supported Dede Smith because she is a <br />well informed and thoughtful participant in education issues. Mr. Perry said Ms. Smith <br />approaches issues with statistical precision, is a consensus builder, and would reinforce <br />the connection between the School Board and the larger community. Mr. Perry said Ms. <br />Smith would also support environmental education. <br /> <br /> Ms. Aubrey Oliver, 930-B South 1st Street, a member of the Charlottesville <br />Redevelopment and Housing Authority and Vice President of PHAR (Public Housing <br />Association of Residents), said that PHAR supports Kristin Szakos who is concerned <br />about low and moderate income students. <br /> <br /> Ms. Michelle Mattioli, 1404 E. Mmrket Street St., supported Muriel Wiggins and <br />Kristin Szakos. Ms. Mattioli said that disparity exists in the school system that has not <br />been solved in many years, and both ofthese candidates tmderstand this problem and will <br />work effectively with other Board members, staffand parents. <br /> <br /> Ms. Susan Thaeker-Gwaltney, 308 Monte Vista Avenue, supported Kristin <br />Szakos who has been involved daily with students and has shown leadership on the PTO. <br /> <br />As there were no further speakers, the public hearing was closed. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said that the public can continue to give feedback to Council until <br />appointments are made on June 30th, <br /> <br />.?UBLIC HEARING: PdSQUEST TO PURCHASE PORTIONS OF LEWIS STREET <br />ORDINANCE: ALLEY <br /> <br /> Mr. Gouldman explained that the ordinance will authorize the sale of two small <br />pieces of land. The applicant is in the process of selling the land, and the survey showed <br />that the buildings overhang the alley. The ~ square foot section is proposed to be sold <br />for $70 with a quitclaim deed. <br /> <br /> <br />
