Mr. Caravati asked that legislation information be crafted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said he would like to see two rates, one if benefits are provided and <br />one if not, and he would also like to see it applied to construction contractors. Mr. Lynch <br />asked if the Department of Economic Development could put some time into the issue, <br />and asked if the Chamber of Commerce has been contacted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said that in the spirit of giving out business awards, the City may want to <br />give out living wage awards. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards said an effort should be made to contact Albemarle County Board of <br />Supervisors members. <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: PIEDMONT VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENT <br /> <br /> Dr. Frank Friedman, President of Piedmont Virginia Community College, <br />introduced City representatives on the PWC Board, and presented highlights of the last <br />year, including: record enrollments; 7,367 individuals served, 25% of which are City <br />residents; 19% minority students~ 29% of the City's enrollment are minorities; partnership <br />with the biotech program which has moved to the Grove Street Technology Center; and <br />strategic planning process (living wage adopted, extended learning institute, workforce <br />development). Dr. Friedman said that PVCC wilt have significant needs equipping and <br />furnishing areas that will be renovated and they are also looking at expansion. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said he hopes that the biotech courses wilt remain primarily a resource to <br />central City residents, and Dr. Friedman said he has the same hopes. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox asked about training for teacher aides, and Dr. Friedman said that is <br />being worked on. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said the Bidwell Training Center in Pittsburgh is a great model and he <br />hopes PVCC can catch a similar portion of the population. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch asked how Dr. Friedman envisions internet expansion, and Dr. <br />Friedman said that there is a need to help individuals become computer literate. He said <br />they are looking at ways to better use compressed video. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Lynch, Dr. Friedman said PVCC is very <br />pleased to have evening bus service, but since the service was announced after classes <br />had already started, it is too early to see an impact. <br /> <br />P~SENTATION: COMMISSION ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES - <br />PARTNERSHIP FOR CHILDREN <br /> <br /> Ms. Mary Reese, Chair of the Advisory Board of the Comanission on Children <br />and Families Partnership for Children initiative~ said that the purpose of the initiative is to <br />coordinate all services children and their families receive. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jaequeline Bryant, staff for PartnerShip for Children, explained that the <br />Partnership has the following work teams: Home-Visiting Collaborative, Early Literacy <br />Work Team, Parent Ed Collaborative, Public Awareness Work Team, and Benchmarks <br /> <br /> <br />
