Mr. O'Connell said that Council will be asked to approve the concept of that <br />project and to authorize moving forward to hire a consultant. <br /> <br /> Mr. Rick Fore, Director of Information Technology, said that becoming an <br />e-community wilt allow Charlottesville to better connect with citizens, schools, the <br />workforce, internal networks, businesses, regional, state or federal agencies, and the <br />world. Significant technology accomplishments or projects in progress include Y2K <br />compliance, the fiber loop build out, library wide area network, servers, switches, routers, <br />firewall, development of new applications, websites developed for 22 departments, <br />automated meter reading, document imaging, a computerized maintenance system, on- <br />line payments, and integrated system project, <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano asked why the fiber loop is so significant, and Mr. Fore said it <br />provides the bandwidth needed to provide certain services such as teleconferencing and <br />web accessibility. <br /> <br /> Ms. Linda Peacock, Assistant City Manager, said that the fiber loop also offers <br />significant cost savings to the City. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox asked if the fiber loop can be used to connect to agencies and churches, <br />but Mr. Fore said that is not allowed by law. <br /> <br />Mr. Caravati asked if accountability can be built into technology contracts. <br /> <br /> Mr. Fore discussed current and future projects: vehicle locator/GPS; field data <br />collection de-rices; upgrade GIS gas inventory; update water distribution GIS; update <br />waste water collection GIS; computerized maintenance management system; 800 MHz <br />radio; general technology improvements; police mobile computing; handheld parking <br />ticket devices; standard telecommunications for Public Works; CHRA administrative <br />support systems; Off.me 2000 upgrade; Windows 2000 upgrade; storage area network; <br />video teleconferencing training; workstation improvements; office technology plan; <br />purchasing and warehouse systems integration; GIS internet services; education and <br /> <br /> <br />
