Askew, District Administrator, Culpeper <br />Carter Myers <br />Board of Supervisors <br /> <br />EXHIBIT A <br /> <br />Adjustments necessary to bring VDOT drawings into compliance with City Council=s <br />Directive to design according to the principles outlined in A Study of Roadway <br />Alternatives for the Meadow Creek Parkway in Mclntire Park, prepared by Rieley & <br />Associates for the City of Charlottesville, April 27, 1999: <br /> <br />Horizontal Alignment: <br /> <br />The horizontal alignment should closely match that shown for Alternative 2-U in the <br />Study of Roadway Alternatives. The points of intersection, delta angles, radii, spiral <br />lengths, and stationing are all shown in the report. In particular, a sequence of radial <br />curves, joined to tangents with spirals on each end, is an important aspect of the <br />horizontal alignment. The current alignment shows only circular curve alignment, with <br />reverse curves in two locations. This is not consistent with the approach discussed in the <br />Roadway Alternatives report. The horizontal alignment is to follow the path shown, <br />which is for the best fit of a two-lane roadway, rather than two lanes of an anticipated <br />four-lane roadway. Geometry should be shown as the centerline for a two-lane road, not <br />the centerline for a four-lane road with two-lanes off-set to one side from the center-line. <br /> <br />Vertical Profile: <br /> <br />The vertical profile should closely match that shown for Alternatives 2-U, 3-U, 4-U in the <br />same report. Lengths of vertical curves, gradients, and K values are listed in the report. <br /> <br />Coordination of Horizontal Alignment with Profile: <br /> <br />It is important that the horizontal and vertical components be coordinated and designed to <br />result in a three-dimensional alignment that is Ain phase.~ The profile in the Study of <br />Roadway Alternatives demonstrates this relationship by showing the lengths of the <br />horizontal curves on the vertical profile. This principle is discussed on page three and <br />shown on Figure A of the report. <br /> <br />Superelevation: <br /> <br />Superelevation should closely match that shown in the report. <br /> <br />Pavement Widening: <br /> <br />The roadway should be designed with 20-£oot standard pavement width (or its metric <br />equivalent), with widening of pavement on curves, in accordance with AASHTO and <br />VDOT widening criteria. The widening should be applied gradually through the length <br />of the spiral curves, and remain full width through the circular curve component of the <br />curve. <br /> <br /> <br />
