<br /> WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Charlottesville,
<br />by creating the Historic Landmarks Commission and the Boards
<br />of Architectural Review, has recognized the value of encouraging
<br />appropriate restoration and preservation of property in the
<br />City; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council wishes to encourage further such
<br />preservation efforts; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council has decided that such efforts by
<br />property owners should be publicly recognized; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council, with the advice of the Historic
<br />Landmarks Commission, the Board of Architectural Review concurring,
<br />will recognize outstanding examples of rehabilitation;
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
<br />the City of Charlottesville recognizes the Turner-LaRowe House,
<br />One University Court, and commends its rehabilitation by Ventrex,
<br />Soltec, Inc., and the Turner-LaRowe House Limited Partnership.

<br />(South Street Restaurant), 106 South Street, and recommends its
<br />adaptive use by the M & W Land Trust, and Browne, Eichman,
<br />Dalgliesh, and Gilpin, architects.

<br /> WHEREAS, Ray C. Hunt, Jr. has held the position in the
<br />last several years of Vice-President for Business and Finance
<br />of the University of Virginia; and
<br />WHEREAS, he has worked for many years to foster good
<br />relations between the University and the community around it; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS. he and the University administration, as well as
<br />the community, have been concerned about the physical deterioration
<br />of fraternity houses at the University, and about the need not only
<br />to improve these conditions, but also to encourage the fraternities
<br />to be responsible members of the community; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, no feasible means of accomplishing this had been
<br />found; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Ray C. Hunt, Jr., in cooperation with a number of
<br />interested friends of the University, including the Charlottesville
<br />Department of Community Development, the Charlottesville Historic
<br />Landmarks Commission, the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission
<br />and the Venable Neighborhood Association, was able to devise a
<br />unique and workable solution; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, through the efforts of many, under the leadership
<br />and encouragement of Ray C. Hunt, Jr., the Historic Renovation
<br />Corporation, Inc. was created; and
<br />
<br />
