54 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it has long been recognized that baseball <br />(of the hardball variety) is our country's national <br />pasttime; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, organized sandlot baseball for adults has, <br />for too long, been absent from the Charlottesville <br />community; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Charlottesville Blues Baseball Club <br />has been created to grace our Sunday afternoons with <br />the "crack" of the bat and the "pop" of the mitt and, <br />in so doin.g, to rejuvenate-the national pasttime in <br />our community, <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Charlottes- <br />ville City Council welcomes the. Charlottesvil.le Blues <br />Baseball Club and extends its best wishes to the <br />Charlottesville Blues for an enjoyable and winning first <br />season of play. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes offered and moved a resolution in support <br /> of the Juanise Dyer Cancer Fund. Dr. Gunter seconded the <br /> motion and it was unanimously approved by Council. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ in the course of the~p~st several weeks, <br /> our community has been .touched by the plight of Juanise <br /> Dyer, a 13-year-old victim of neuroblastoma, a rare and <br /> usually fatal form of cancer only now lending itself to <br /> experimental treatment techniques; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, due to the experimental nature of such <br /> techniques, expenses incurred for such treatment are not <br /> deemed eligible for Medicaid funding; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, despite such funding obstacles, Juanise <br /> Dyer is currently undergoing the expensive experimental <br /> treatment at a hospital in Gainesville, Florida; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a sum in excess of $35,000.'00 has been <br /> raised by private contributions in an effort to aid the <br /> Dyer family in addressing medical expenses expected to <br /> reach $125,000.00. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Charlottes- <br /> ville City Council calls upon the citizens of our community <br /> to join in the commendable effort to aid Juanise Dyer and <br /> her family in their time of need by generously contributing <br /> to the Juanise Dyer Cancer Fund, c/o Sovran Bank, P. O. Box <br /> 1328, Charlottesville, V~. 22902. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix brought Council's attention to the report <br /> concerning li~ghting Pen Park and stated that it would be <br /> placed on the agenda for the next meeting. <br /> <br /> On motion by Dr. Gunter, seconded by Mrs. Gleason, <br /> Council voted to meet in executive session to discuss <br /> acquisition and disposition of public property as exempted <br /> by Section 2.1-344(a)(2) of the Virginia Freedom of <br /> <br /> <br />
