117 <br /> <br /> Mr. Jim Dunbar, of the City School Administration, stated <br />that there had been no donations. <br /> <br /> Dr. Mooney stated that a campaign was planned for early <br />spring to raise funds for a sculpture. <br /> <br /> Dr. Vincent Cibbarelli, Supereintendent of City Schools, <br />gave an enrollment update: 4,632 students are enrolled <br />which is 58 fewer than projected, with lower enrollment in <br />the elementary schools and higher enrollment in middle and high <br />schools. Dr. Cibbarelli stated additional staff was added <br />at Johnson Elementary School but no extra funds were needed due <br />to funds available from the Charlottesville-Albemarle <br />Technical Center. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli stated that the schools are focusing on <br />the slogsns "Taking Action for EXcellence," or doing all that <br />can be done to help students succeed at school, and "No Failing <br />Students," or stressing that the goal is that all students <br />should be able to achieve near or at grade level. Dr. <br />Cibbarelli added that there is a growing trend of students <br />who are hard to teach and that many students who fail have <br />the ability to succeed. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli listed the following new programs: <br />1) involvement of the Monticello Area Community Action program <br />at Charlottesville High School, 2) English for high-ability <br />and slow-performing students, 3) expansion of Quest, <br />4) shared guidance function with Piedmont Virginia Community <br />College, 5) guidance counselors in elementary schools, <br />6) new science program, 7) enrichment programs, 8) computer <br />programs, 9) in-service training to improve teaching, <br />10) pre-school program for kids-at-risk, and 11) parent <br />education program. <br /> <br /> Dr. Pete Eberhart, Assistant Superintendent of City <br />Schools, stated that an early morning study hall program has <br />begun to help athletes with educational problems. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli stated that a teacher evaluation process <br />has begun using an evaluation model as a frame of reference. <br />Dr. Cibbarelli added that principals have increased their <br />observance of teachers using this model and it has proven <br />valuable in improving teacher techniques. Dr. Cibbarelli <br />stated that while the career ladder has been studied, he <br />felt it needed to be more finely tuned before it could be <br />implemented. <br /> <br /> Ms. Alicia Lugo, School Board Chairman, stated that the <br />Board has been discussing ways to enhance teacher performance <br />and give recognition. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli stated a collaborative effort with the <br />teachers and the University of Virginia School of Education, <br />a pilot program in the State, has begun which involves <br />teachers becoming adjunct professors working with University <br />of Virginia students. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dunbar stated that twelve community performances have <br />been scheduled for the Charlottesville High School Performing <br />Arts Center, that a brochure has been sent out about the <br />Center, and advertising will begin soon. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli stated that the transfer of school bus <br /> service to the City had worked well and that there had been <br /> good cooperation between the Transit System and the schools. <br />~~~ng was adjourned. ~ ~~___~_i ...... <br /> <br /> <br />
