<br />the total flow unit above this point being considered,
<br />and with the probability factor of simultaneous use.
<br />LOCAL VENTILATING PIPE. A local ventilating pipe is
<br />a pipe on the fixture side of the trap through which vapor or
<br />foul air is removed from a room or fixture.
<br />LOOP VENT. A loop vent is the same as a circuit vent
<br />except that it loops back and connects with a stack vent in-
<br />stead of a vent stack.
<br />MAIN. The main of any system of continuous piping is the
<br />principal artery of the system, to which branches may be con-
<br />nected.
<br />MAIN SEWER. See PUBLIC SEWER.
<br />MAIN VENT. The main vent is the principal artery of the
<br />venting system, to which vent branches may be connected.
<br />MAY. The word "may" is a permissive term.
<br />NUISANCE. The word "nuisance" embraces public nui-
<br />sances as known in common law or in equity jurisprudence;
<br />and whatever is dangerous to human life or detrimental to
<br />health; whatever building, structure, or premises is not suffi-
<br />ciently ventilated, sewered, drained, cleaned, or lighted, in ref-
<br />erence to its intended or actual
<br />watersupply and
<br />whatever ply unwholesomes are
<br />the
<br />air or human food or drink o P
<br />also severally, in contemplation of this Code, nuisances.
<br />OFFSET. An offset in a line of piping is a combination of
<br />elbows or bends which brings one section of the pipe out of
<br />line but into a line parallel with the other section.
<br />PERSON. Person is a natural person, his heirs, executors,
<br />administrators or assigns; and includes a firm, partnership
<br />or corporation, its or their successors or assigns. Singular
<br />includes plural; male includes female.
<br />PITCH. Grade.
<br />PLUMBING. Plumbing is the practice, materials, and fix-
<br />tures used in the installation, maintenance, extension, and
<br />alteration of all piping, fixtures, appliances, and appurtenances
<br />in connection with any of the following: Sanitary drainage
<br />facilities, the venting system and the public or private water
<br />supply systems, within or adjacent to any building, structure,
<br />or conveyance; also the practice and materials used in the
<br />installation, maintenance, extension, or alteration of liquid
<br />waste, or sewage, and water supply systems of any premises
<br />to their connection with any point of public disposal or other
<br />acceptable terminal.
<br />PLUMBING FIXTURES. Plumbing fixtures are installed
<br />receptacles, devices, or appliances which are supplied with
<br />water or which receive or discharge liquids or liquid -borne
<br />wastes, with or without discharge into the drainage system
<br />with which they may be directly or indirectly connected.
<br />PLUMBING INSPECTOR. The Plumbing Inspector shall
<br />be the person appointed by the City Manager to enforce the
<br />provisions of the Plumbing Code.
<br />PLUMBING SYSTEM. The plumbing system includes the
<br />water supply and distribution pipes; plumbing fixtures and
<br />traps; soil, waste, and vent pipes; building drains and build-
<br />ing sewer's including their respective connections, devices, and
<br />appurtenances within the property lines of the premises, and
<br />water -treating or water -using equipment.
<br />POOL. A pool is a water receptacle used for swimming or
<br />as a plunge or other bath, designed to accommodate more than
<br />one bather at a time.
<br />POTABLE WATER. Potable water is water which is satis-
<br />factory for drinking, culinary, and domestic purposes, and
<br />meets the requirements of the Health Authority having jur-
<br />isdiction.
<br />PRIVATE OR PRIVATE USE. In the classification of
<br />plumbing fixtures, private applies to fixtures in residences and
<br />apartments and to fixtures in private bathrooms of hotels and
<br />similar installations where the fixtures are intended for the
<br />use of a family or an individual.
<br />PRIVATE SEWER. A private sewer is a sewer privately
<br />owned and not directly controlled by the City of Charlottes-
<br />ville.
<br />PUBLIC OR PUBLIC USE. In the classification of plumb-
<br />ing fixtures, public applies to fixtures in general toilet rooms
<br />of schools, gymnasiums, hotels, railroad stations, public build -
<br />HANGERS. See SUPPORTS.
<br />HORIZONTAL BRANCH. A horizontal branch is a drain
<br />pipe extending laterally from a soil or waste stack or building
<br />drain, with or without vertical sections or branches, which re-
<br />ceives the discharge from one or more fixture drains and con-
<br />ducts it to the soil or waste stack or to the building (house)
<br />drain.
<br />HORIZONTAL PIPE. Horizontal pipe means any pipe or
<br />fitting which makes an angle of more than 45 degrees with the
<br />vertical.
<br />HOUSE DRAIN. See BUILDING DRAIN.
<br />HOUSE SEWER. See BUILDING SEWER.
<br />HOUSE TRAP. See BUILDING TRAP.
<br />INDIRECT WASTE PIPE. An indirect waste pipe is a
<br />pipe that does not connect directly with the drainage system
<br />but conveys liquid wastes by discharging into a plumbing
<br />fixture or receptacle which is directly connected to the drain-
<br />age system.
<br />INDIVIDUAL VENT. An individual vent is a pipe in-
<br />stalled to vent a fixture trap and which connects with the vent
<br />system. above the fixture served or terminates in the open air.
<br />INDUSTRIAL WASTES. Industrial wastes are liquid
<br />wastes resulting from the processes employed in industrial
<br />establishments and are free of fecal matter.
<br />INSANITARY. Contrary to sanitary principles—injurious
<br />to health.
<br />INTERCEPTOR. An interceptor is a device designed and
<br />installed so as to separate and retain deleterious, hazardous,
<br />and undesirable matter from normal wastes and permit nor-
<br />mal sewage or liquid wastes to discharge into the disposal
<br />terminal by gravity.
<br />LEADER. A leader (downspout) is the water conductor
<br />from the roof to the building storm drain, or other means of
<br />disposal.
<br />LIQUID WASTE. Liquid waste is the discharge from any
<br />fixture, appliance, or appurtenance, in connection with a
<br />plumbing system which does not receive fecal matter.
<br />WASTE. See LIQUID WASTE AND INDUSTRIAL
<br />WASTES.
<br />WASTE PIPE. A waste pipe is a pipe which conveys only
<br />liquid waste, free of fecal matter.
<br />WATER DISTRIBUTING PIPE. A water distributing
<br />pipe in a building or premises is a pipe which conveys water
<br />from the water service pipe to the plumbing fixtures and other
<br />water outlets.
<br />WATER MAIN. The water (street) main is a water supply
<br />pipe for the public or community use.
<br />WATER OUTLET. A water outlet, as used in connection
<br />with the water distributing system, is the discharge opening
<br />for the water (1) to a fixture; (2) to atmospheric pressure
<br />(except into an open tank which is part of the water supply
<br />system) ; (3) to a boiler or heating system; (4) to any water
<br />operated device or equipment requiring water to operate, but
<br />not a part of the plumbing system.
<br />WATER RISER PIPE. See RISER.
<br />WATER SERVICE PIPE. The water service pipe is the
<br />pipe from the water main or other sources of water supply
<br />to the building served.
<br />WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM. The water supply system of
<br />a building or premises consists of the water service pipe, the
<br />water distributing pipes, and the necessary connecting pipes,
<br />fittings, control valves, and all appurtenances in or adjacent
<br />to the building or premises.
<br />WET VENT. A wet vent is a vent which receives the dis
<br />charge from wastes other than water closets.
<br />YOKE VENT. A yoke vent is a pipe connecting upward
<br />from a soil or waste stack to a vent stack for the purpose of
<br />preventing pressure changes in the stack.
