The trap seal is the maximum vertical depth
of liquid that a trap will retain, measured between the crown
weir and the top of the dip of the trap.
VACUUM BREAKER. A vacuum breaker is a device de-
signed to protect a water supply pipe against back -siphonage
by admission of air to relieve vacuum in the water distribu-
tion system. A vacuum breaker is not designed to protect the
•
water supply under conditions of back pressure.
VACUUM BREAKER, PRESSURE TYPE. A pressure
type vacuum breaker is a vacuum breaker
designed to operate
under conditions of static line
pressure.
VACUUM BREAKER, NON -PRESSURE TYPE. A non-
pressure type vacuum breaker is a vacuum breaker which is
not designed to be subjected to static line pressure.
VENT PIPE. See VENT SYSTEM.
VENT STACK. A vent stack is a vertical vent pipe in-
stalled primarily for the
purpose of providing circulation of
air to and from any part of the drainage system.
VENT SYSTEM. A vent system is a pipe or pipes in-
stalled to provide a flow of air to from
or a drainage system
or to provide a circulation of air within such system to
pro-
tect trap seals from siphonage and back pressure.
VERTICAL PIPE. A vertical pipe is any pipe or fitting
which is installed in
a vertical position or which makes an
angle of not more than 45 degrees
with the vertical.
0
ings, bars, public comfort stations, and other installations
(whether pay or free) where a number of fixtures are in-
stalled so that their use is similarly unrestricted.
PUBLIC SEWER.
