51 - - INSURANCE - - LIFE.

<br />On every license to a person or firm to act as agent or solicitor for any Life
<br />
<br />Insurance Company, not having its principal office in this city there shall be a specific
<br />
<br />license tax for doing business in this city of thirty dollars ($430.) for each company
<br />
<br />represented.
<br />
<br />When there are two or more agents not acting as co-partners and representing the
<br />
<br />same company, each of such agents shall be required to procure a license.
<br />
<br />Every agent or solicitor paying the foresaid license is allowed to employ canvassers.
<br />
<br />52—INSURANCE -- LIVE STOCK.
<br />
<br />On every license to a person or firm to act as agent or solicitor of a Live Stock
<br />
<br />Insurance Company, not having its principal office in this city, there shall be a
<br />
<br />specific license tax for doing business in this city of twenty five dollars ($25.)
<br />
<br />per annum for each company represented.
<br />
<br />53 --- ITTINERANT MUSICIANS.
<br />
<br />Every itinerant musician performing on the streets of this city, as organ-
<br />
<br />grinders, bag-pipe blowers, etc., shall pay a specific tax of two dollars per week or
<br />
<br />fraction thereof.
<br />
<br />54 –JOB PRINTING OFFICE.
<br />
<br />On every license to a person, firm or corporation to conduct a Job printing Office
<br />
<br />the tax shall be twenty five dollars ($25.) .
<br />
<br />55---JUNK DEALERS.
<br />
<br />On every license to a junk dealer the tax shall be fifty dollars ($50.) and
<br />
<br />on every person who shall engage in the business of buying junk or other matter for
<br />
<br />a Junk Dealer or for sale to a Junk sealer, the tax shall be thirty dollars ($30.) .

<br />56 --- LAUNDRIES.
<br />
<br />Every person who operates a Laundry shall pay for the privilege of conducting
<br />
<br />such business, if it be a laundry operated other than by hand, in this city, the sum
<br />
<br />of twenty five dollars (25. ).
<br />
<br />On every person operating a Hand Lundry the license tax shall be ten dollars
<br />
<br />($10.), But nothing in this section shall be construed to impose a license tax
<br />
<br />upon persons who wash bed clothes, wearing apparel, and so forth, without laundry
<br />
<br />machinery, and who do not keep shops or other regular places of business for laundry
<br />
<br />purposes.
<br />
<br />57—LIGHTNING ROD AGENTS.
<br />
<br />Every person canvassing for, selling or erecting Lightning Rods in this city
<br />
<br />other than regular licensed merchants, shall pay a specific license tax of twenty five
<br />
<br />dollars ($25.) for a year or fractional part thereof. Not transferable.
<br />
<br />58 –LIQUOR DEALERS.
<br />
<br />For the privilege of selling; or offering to sell by sample or by representation
<br />
<br />or otherwise, wine, ardent spirits, malt liquors, or mixture thereof, alcoholic
<br />
<br />bitters, bitters containing alcohol or fruit preserved in ardent spirits by WHOLESALE
<br />
<br />the sum of four hundred dollars ($400.).
<br />
<br />For the privilege of selling or offering to sell by sample or by representation or otherwise
<br />
<br />wine, ardent spirits, malt liquors or any mixture thereof alcoholic bitters
<br />
<br />bitters containing alcohol, or fruit preserved in ardent spirits, either by retail or
<br />
<br />to be drunk at the place where sold, origin in any other way, the suns of four hundred
<br />
<br />dollars ($400.). The said license to include only the privilege of selling in
<br />
<br />quantities not exceeding five gallons at any one time to any individual, which shall
<br />
<br />include both the privilege of selling to be delivered to the purchaser in bottles,
<br />
<br />jugs, demijohns, or other vessels and of selling to be drunk at the place where sold.
<br />
<br />For the privilege of manufacturing, bottling, or selling exclusively, malt liquors except
<br />
<br />as is statute law of Virginia, the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150.) .
<br />
<br />It shall be unlawful for any person, association of persons, or corporations to sell,
<br />
<br />in the City of Charlottesville, or within one mile of the corporate limits of said city,
<br />
<br />wine, ardent spirits, malt liquors, or any mixture of them, alcoholic bitters,
<br />
<br />bitters, containing alcohol, or fruits preserved in ardent spirits, without first
<br />
<br />obtaining; the license for the benefit of the city, as above specified and provided,
<br />
<br />and all persons conducing such business without such license shall upon conviction,
<br />
<br />before the Police Justice of said city, be fined not less than $25. nor more than $100.
<br />
<br />for every day or fractional part of a day, during which such business is conducted
<br />
<br />without such license, and, in the discretion of such Police, Justice such persons
<br />
<br />may be confined in jail not exceeding three months.
<br />
<br />59 ----LIVE STOCK BROKERS, DEALERS, ETC.
<br />
<br />On every person trading in horses, mules, cattle, hogs, and sheep, fifteen dollars
<br />
<br />($15.). General Auctioneers shall not sell such animals either privately or at
<br />
<br />Auction, without paying special tax.
<br />
<br />Butchers buying, for their own trade shall not be subject to this tax.
<br />
<br />60 - - LIVERY STABLES.
<br />
<br />On every license to keep a Livery Stable the tax shall be thirty five dollars
<br />
<br />($35.) and an additional tax of fifty cents on each stall therein, and two dollars
<br />
<br />for each saddle horse.
<br />
<br />61—MANFACTURERS OF VEHICLES.
<br />
<br />On every person or firm conducting the business of manufacturing Wagons, Drays,
<br />
<br />and Carts, Carriages, Buggies, and like vehicles, the license tax shall be twenty five
<br />
<br />dollars ($25.).
<br />
<br />62—MEDICINES, SLAVES, ETC.
<br />
<br />On ever, license to cry or sell Medicines, Slaves, or Liniments, on the streets
<br />
<br />alleys or elsewhere in t' is city, the tax shall be two dollars per day, but, no such
<br />
<br />license shall be issued except by authority of the Mayor.
