<br />AN ORDINANCE TO REGULATE THE ERECTION OF ELECTRICAL SIGNS AND PEOVI DI NG '&' lEi�iALTI�S
<br />POE VIOLATION T EOF.
<br />BE IT OhDAINLD by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia,
<br />(1) bny person, firm, or corporation desiring to erect and maintain an
<br />ele.;tric sign over any sidewalk, street, avenue, or alley, shall male application for
<br />the privilege so to do, to the City ldanager, on printed forms to be furnished there.
<br />for.
<br />(2) Unpon applicant's compliance with the following, requirements, the �%ity
<br />Manager shall issue to the applicant cant a construction per:ait, limited ted io a period
<br />of construction only. The construction and installatilin of all electric signs shr,4il
<br />conform to the rules and requirements of the National Board of Fire inderWriters for
<br />the installation of .,wing and apparatus forelectric light, heat find power andfor the
<br />construe ti on and installation of electric signs and displays and in ad d i ton to such
<br />further requirements as are inorporated in' this ordinance. The City Manager shall
<br />upon beim; notified of the completion of such sign, cause an inspection of same to be
<br />made, and if such sign has been constructed in accordance with the provisions of this
<br />oridnance and is a,)proved by the laity :;lectri cian, he :.:,all then Issue and electrical
<br />permit without cost for the operation and tnaintena.nce of such si ns, for a period �f
<br />five (5) years from the date of issuance of such permit, and the use of electric
<br />current previous to the isuance of an electrical permit is prohibited, ho alteration
<br />shall be m: -:de on any sign erected or maintained under authority of this ordinance unless
<br />all the provisi ons of this ordinance are fully complied with and a permit issued f'or
<br />such alteration.
<br />(3) :.o permit required for the construction, erection or maintenance of any
<br />sign shall be issued until the fee of one ($1.00) dollar has been paid.
<br />(4) 1,111 applications shall be signed by the property ownei and permits to be
<br />issued by the City olanager s,iall be in writing and the re shall be two originals, one of
<br />which shall be delivered to applicant and the other small be kept on f ile in the
<br />Office of the City Manager.
<br />(5) It shall hereafter be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to
<br />erect or maintain any electric sign or signs except as pi'eseri bed in this ordinance,
<br />and to be permitted under this ordinance, an electric sign must be composed entirely of
<br />metal, excepting the lettering, or advertising designs to be illuminated, which shall
<br />be composed of glass or other transparent or semi -transparent substance of sufficient
<br />thickness to be reasonably safe from easy breakage; and here the electric li~hts illu-
<br />minating said sign fare concef:led, there shall be at least one electric light for each
<br />letter or device on the said.. sign and not less than ten lights in any sign. i.11
<br />signs must be approved by the City ,Manager, and the eledtric lights u-�ed therein shall
<br />be not less than 40 watts each.
<br />(6) Miscellaneous signs: Other electric signs not provided for in the fore-
<br />going cla s :i i'i c&ti on shall be .classified by the City Manager. The City ..Tanager scall
<br />have all elejtric signs inspected at least twice a year to pass on public safety of Sa,Ie,
<br />and is hereby authorized to jrder any sign down or r:ut in proper concition at any time
<br />it becomes a danger to public safety or fails to meet with the requirements of this
<br />ordinance.
<br />(7) No sign, figure or ornament shall be permitted to �.ro ject over any street un-
<br />le.;s attached to the wall of a building nor shall the same project beyond the curb line.,
<br />(6) Signs erected by authority of this ordinance and overhe.nging any sideway,,
<br />street, avenue or alley, must be placed at least nine (9) feet above the sidev,alli
<br />street, avenue or alley, and at a distance not greater than two (2) feet from the
<br />building.
<br />(9) No sign shall be supported, anchored or braced to the wooden beams or other
<br />framwork of a building. 'Nooden supports or braces will not be permitted.
<br />(10) No sign ( other than sky signs ) shall be constructed or eredted having
<br />more than 50 square feet of surfr_ce and all signs shell be designed to i.,,ri thsta.nd a. Find
